Your 2022 entries by the numbers [View this email online]( [NPR Tiny Desk Contest]( What do houseplants, cows and desks all have in common? The Tiny Desk Contest team saw a lot of them in your entries. Last week, our team finished watching the thousands of videos you submitted to this year’s Contest (yes, we really do watch every single one!), and now our judges will spend a bit more time with them before they share their favorites and select a winner. We saw so much talent and variety in your entries — and to give you a sense of just how much creativity we saw, we've broken down this year's entries by the numbers. - 2,647 of you entered the Contest for the very first time this year. We love making new friends and are so glad you’re here! - 60 entries included animal friends – we saw everything from dogs and cats to sheep and fish. - 135 of you lugged your desks outside and filmed your entries in the great outdoors (including [this entry]( which might be the most adventurous one we’ve seen yet). - 50 states (plus the District of Columbia, U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico) were represented in this year’s Contest. - 78 of you sung in a language other than English in your entries – and [one of you]( even invented your own language. - 474 of you submitted to the Contest at least three times before this year – and a handful of you have now entered eight(!) times since we launched in 2014. - 247 houseplants were on display in your entries. (We don’t think there are any surviving plants at the Tiny Desk now, but hopefully we’ll bring some life back to NPR’s headquarters soon.) --------------------------------------------------------------- Newsletter continues after sponsor message --------------------------------------------------------------- Our favorite entries last week included hip-hop from St. Louis, country from Kentucky and more. Recently on the Contest blog: - [LouTribe Jigg, “I AM”]( - [Marcus Jade, “Legs and Bones”]( - [Mother Muerte, “Al Mas Allá”]( - [Caleb Bailey & The Bottom Dollars, “White Knuckle, Black Lung”]( - [james the eighth, “Come Around”]( - [Rebirth Canal, “AI”]( - [Wallace Tallman, “You Are (Cecilia June)]( Also, this is the last week to [complete the Contest survey]( – be sure to fill it out by Friday to let us know how we can make this Contest better for artists like you. From our own tiny desks, NPR’s Tiny Desk Contest team P.S. Also last week: Our friends at NPR Member station KQED published a documentary called [Dear Homeland]( a “reflection on family, resilience, the power of music and the meaning of home,” which follows five-time Contest entrant Diana Gameros’ immigration journey from Ciudad Juárez, Mexico to San Francisco, Calif. --------------------------------------------------------------- Stream your local NPR station. The Flesch readability score uses the average length of your sentences (measured by the number of words) and the average number of syllables per word in an equation to calculate the reading ease. Text with a very high Flesch reading ease score (about 100) is straightforward and easy to read, with short sentences and no words of more than two syllables. Usually, a reading ease score of 60-70 is considered acceptable/normal for web copy.
