[Listen to their story](. There have been many who struggled to fit in the cloistered world of classical music, but Julius Eastman stands tall among them. It's only in recent years that friends and scholars have begun [casting a renewed spotlight on the short-lived composer's music](. His personal motto, he said in 1976, was "to be what I am to the fullest: Black to the fullest, a musician to the fullest, and a homosexual to the fullest."
