Plus, âWorld Cafeâ talks to Branford Marsalis and The Black Keys [View this email online]( [NPR Music]( by Lars Gotrich, Marissa Lorusso, Lyndsey McKenna and Daoud Tyler-Ameen [Megan Thee Stallion kicked off Saturday Night Live's 46th season in style â and with substance.]( Will Heath/NBC It’s a time-honored tradition for up-and-coming and veteran artists alike: getting the rare booking to perform from Studio 8H at Rockefeller Center as the Saturday Night Live musical guest. And for our own Stephen Thompson, it’s become an annual rite of spring: cruelly ranking the season’s acts from first to worst (recommended reading: [his 2018 list]( featuring U2, Cardi B and Childish Gambino; [the 2019 ranking]( featuring Anderson .Paak, BTS and, sigh, Greta Van Fleet; and the [shortened/home season that was 2020]( featuring Chance the Rapper, Lizzo and Taylor Swift). “This season marked a bit of a shift in SNL's musical direction, most notably in favor of rock acts with guitars, while still bringing back a few mainstays to perform in consecutive seasons,” [Stephen writes](. “But this season's batch still added up to a robust assortment of fresh talent, fresh conversation-starters and, yes, the occasional cinder of fresh hell.” We won’t spoil the list; it’s best consumed with a bowl of popcorn, and you’re guaranteed a laugh along the way. And if you’re a devoted viewer, we want to hear from you: Did you have a favorite SNL performance this year? Any thoughts on who should get a shot next season?
