A judge on Thursday barred federal law enforcement officers in Portland, Ore., from using force against legal observers or journalists at protests if they are not suspected of committing crimes. [The order will last for 14 days](. The Department of Homeland Security said federal law enforcement officers are working "diligently and honorably" to enforce federal law by defending federal property and the lives of fellow officers against "violent anarchists" rioting in the streets. The body of civil rights icon and longtime congressman John Lewis will lie in state at the U.S. Capitol next week. The public viewing will take place outdoors and [attendees will be required to wear masks while waiting in line]( to pay tribute. Lewis' family has requested that people pay their respects online using the hashtags #BelovedCommunity and #HumanDignity. President Trump announced Thursday that the Jacksonville, Fla., part of this year’s Republican National Convention has been canceled. The last-minute decision to cancel the event follows [the GOP’s mad scramble over the last few months]( to hold a conventional party gathering in spite of the ongoing pandemic. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., took to the House floor on Thursday to admonish insults hurled at her by Rep. Ted Yoho, R-Fla., earlier this week. Ocasio-Cortez, who has become [a key voice in the progressive movement]( and a frequent target of Republicans, said she's concerned about an increasing acceptance of dehumanizing and misogynistic language toward women. China will shut down the U.S. consulate in the southwestern city of Chengdu in retaliation for the U.S. shutting down China's Houston consulate this week as [relations between the two countries reach their lowest point]( in more than 30 years. The GOP-controlled Senate on Thursday overwhelmingly approved a defense bill that calls for renaming U.S. military bases that honor Confederate officers. The judge in McFarland's case said he handed out a harsh sentence as a deterrent for those wishing to commit similar crimes. Last month, Cosby welcomed her mother home after McFarland was released from prison. The pair recorded a conversation for StoryCorps on their first weekend together in 15 years.
