Three drug distributors and one drugmaker have reached a tentative settlement in a landmark opioid trial in Ohio. News of [the last-minute deal]( emerged just hours before the first federal trial on liability for the opioid crisis was set to begin Monday morning.
Canadians are going to the polls Monday to decide whether Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's Liberal Party will get another term. Trudeau is locked in a virtual tie with the opposition Conservative Party in [a race that has some distinctly American overtones](.
President Trump's acting chief of staff, Mick Mulvaney, on Sunday again tried to control the damage from his earlier acknowledgment that the White House pressured Ukraine to investigate the 2016 presidential election. Mulvaney said his words were [taken out of context](.
Defense Secretary Mark Esper traveled to Afghanistan on Saturday in an effort to restart peace talks with the Taliban after President Trump scrapped plans for negotiations at Camp David last month. Esper also announced U.S. troops being withdrawn from northern Syria will be [redeployed to Iraq to help fight ISIS]( even though Trump has insisted that ISIS is completely defeated.

During the rainy season, Bangkok's firefighters spend more time answering snake removal calls than fighting fires. And when pythons, cobras and pit vipers show up in Bangkok homes, Pinyo Pukpinyo, a sergeant in the city's fire department, is the expert who catches them. By his own count, [he's been bitten more than 20 times]( mostly by pythons, which are nonvenomous but can still hurt. Pinyo is clearly comfortable with all of them; his work, he says, "makes me happy."
