Whenever our blog has the chance to feature the [photos of Tommy Trenchard]( I am thrilled.
There's an intense humanity in his work. When you look at the face of someone photographed by Trenchard, you can feel their joy, their pain, their hopes and dreams and disappointments.
Trenchard, a 31-year-old Brit now based in Cape Town, South Africa, first began photographing for Goats and Soda during the Ebola crisis of 2015. During the assignment he had malaria -- but didn't know it at the time. "As the health system had crashed," he recalls, "I only discovered it after I got home."
The pictures we feature this week were taken under much calmer circumstances. Trenchard and author Wendell Steavenson visited Madagascar to see how the vanilla boom is affecting a village where vanilla is farmed.
