Plus, remembering Buddy Holly 60 years to the day the music died. by Korva Coleman and Jill Hudson F

Plus, remembering Buddy Holly 60 years to the day the music died. [NPR] by Korva Coleman and Jill Hudson First Up [Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax (D-Va), has not called for embattled Gov. Ralph Northam to resign. Should Northam step aside, Fairfax would become Virginia's second black Governor.]( The Washington Post/Getty Images Here’s what we’re following today. Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam is facing mounting pressure to resign amid the ongoing scandal around a racist photo published in a 1984 medical school yearbook. Virginians who have supported him are [wrestling with what to make of the controversy]( and his insistence on remaining in office. Should Northam resign, Virginia Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax would become the state’s second African-American governor, and one of just a few across the country since Reconstruction. Here’s a primer on [the 39-year-old politician who is next in line](. President Trump has renewed his demand for funding for a border wall. The tone of the president's remarks in an interview taped Friday with CBS News calls into question whether Trump will use Tuesday's primetime speech [to appeal for compromise]( as advertised. A plane broke apart and crashed into a Southern California neighborhood on Sunday, killing the pilot and four people in a house. Several witnesses described the 1981 twin-engine Cessna 414 [bursting into flames and “raining plane parts”]( before going down in Yorba Linda. California Attorney General Xavier Becerra will deliver the Democrats’ response to the State of the Union speech in Spanish. Becerra — who has [sued the Trump administration 45 times]( over a wide range of issues — will be joined by former Georgia House minority leader Stacey Abrams, who will give her response to Trump's speech in English. The New England Patriots are again the Super Bowl champions, the team's sixth championship victory since 2002. The Patriots defeated the Los Angeles Rams 13-3 in [a slow-moving game with the lowest total score in Super Bowl history](. Wide receiver Julian Edelman was named Super Bowl LIII MVP after a remarkable showing with 149 yards and 10 receptions. --------------------------------------------------------------- The Daily Good The women who dare to bicycle in Pakistan. [Zulekha Dawood leads the group of female cyclists through the impoverished Lyari neighborhood in Karachi, Pakistan. They ride early in the morning to avoid the worst of the traffic.]( Diaa Hadid/NPR It’s rare to see a woman riding a bike in conservative Pakistan. It’s seen as a vulgar and sexlike act because a woman must straddle a seat. But two dozen women and girls have been [cycling through the streets and alleys of Karachi]( as part of a community effort to grant a bit of independence to young women from working-class families who have more constraints than women from wealthier Pakistani homes. The initiative echoes other pop-up efforts across South Asia and the Middle East where a woman in a public space without a destination like going to the market or to school is often viewed as a threat to public morality. --------------------------------------------------------------- Digging Deeper Are you often angry or irritable? You may be depressed. Ariel Davis for NPR Many people — including physicians — associate depression in adults with feelings of hopelessness, sadness and a lack of motivation or concentration. [But what about anger?]( Some psychiatrists say they see a lot of angry outbursts in their depressed patients. This month NPR is exploring anger and what we can learn from this powerful emotion. Irritability is a well-known symptom of depression in children and adolescents, but the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders doesn’t list anger as a symptom of major depression for adults. "Why would someone who happens to be irritable and angry when depressed as an adolescent suddenly stop being angry at age 18?" asks Dr. Maurizio Fava, a psychiatrist at Massachusetts General Hospital and a professor at Harvard Medical School. Nearly a third of Fava’s patients report what he calls “anger attacks,” a phenomenon similar to panic attacks. After the anger passes, the patients are filled with remorse. Fava’s research suggests that patients treated with antidepressants saw their strong anger subside. --------------------------------------------------------------- Today's Listen Building a world where people don’t have to say “Me, too.” [Tarana Burke is a civil rights activist and the founder of the Me Too Movement. ]( Marla Aufmuth/TED This episode of the TED Radio Hour explores gender, power and fairness. For Tarana Burke, #MeToo began as a way to tell survivors, "You're not alone." But as the movement evolved, another priority emerged — how can we work together to put an end to sexual violence entirely? (Listening time, 12:29). [▶ LISTEN]( --------------------------------------------------------------- Before You Go [Buddy Holly poses for a portrait circa 1958. On the 60th anniversary of his death, Holly's Lubbock, Tx. classmates remember the young talent.]( Michael Ochs Archives/Getty Images - Buddy Holly’s classmates remember him [60 years after “the day the music died.”]( - [Super Bowl Ads 2019]( Here's what worked — and what really didn't — on the world's biggest showcase for TV advertising. - [Atlanta hip-hop star 21 Savage]( was arrested this weekend for allegedly overstaying his visa. ICE says the Grammy-nominated rapper is a British citizen. - A new study says [poor students are more likely to play football]( despite concerns over brain injuries. --------------------------------------------------------------- What do you think of today's email?
