HEADS UP
Happy National Freethought Day! Kanye West apparently celebrated this a day early, but more on that later.
Here’s a rundown of news we’re watching.
[Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince, Mohammed bin Salman, faces increasing criticism]( surrounding the disappearance of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, who was last seen entering the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul on Oct. 2. Apart from the Khashoggi matter, Mohammed is under attack on multiple fronts, including his country’s involvement in Yemen’s civil war and the detention of Lebanon’s leader, among others. Further, Khashoggi's possible murder is [straining relations between Washington and Riyadh]( and U.S. senators have called for global sanctions against Saudi Arabia.
[Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is shown during a visit to Spain in April. Murdered Salvadoran Archbishop will become a saint this weekend.
Thirty eight years after his assassination, [Roman Catholic Archbishop Óscar Arnulfo Romero will be canonized by Pope Francis]( to sainthood. DIGGING DEEPER
DNA sleuthing is nabbing criminals. But do innocent people lose privacy?
In Israel recently, researchers scanned the genetic information of more than one million people and identified close relatives of more than 60 percent. California police used a similar method to find the elusive Golden State Killer earlier this year. Genealogical forensics experts say the new science can help crack decades-old cases.
Others say the Science report makes genealogical research sound easier and safer than it really is. The vexing news, warns law professor Erin Murphy, is that [people need to understand what they're doing when they share their genealogical information with databases]( like Ancestry.com and 23andMe.com. "You've made a decision not just for yourself but for your siblings, for your distant cousins, people you don't even know you're related to, for your children, for your children's children."
