[A new lawsuit filed against U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions]( claims that migrants who have been apprehended for illegally crossing the southern U.S. border are being held in revolting conditions by Customs and Border Protection. The Center for Human Rights & Constitutional Law filed the suit, which NPR has reviewed. Basic needs reportedly not met: Migrants who have been interviewed by the group say facility guards have denied them access to showers. One mother said her child wore soiled clothing for days because they were not allowed to wash. Another woman said the worst thing was the water: "I had to plug my nose to be able to drink it. It came out of the faucet and smelled terrible." Yet another mother said when she asked the guards for water for her thirsty child, they refused her. "My daughter started crying,” she said. “The officers told me to shut up.” According to the lawsuit, one room housed 18 females and had three mattresses for all of them. The migrants say they were told they couldn’t have any more. The temperature inside the facility is so chilly that another mother reported she could only cradle and warm one of her two children at a time while the other shivered. The lawsuit says the migrants refer to the cold facilities as the “Ice House,” the “Dog House” or the “Dog Pound.” Other complaints [describe inedible food](. What’s next: The Justice Department could not immediately be reached for comment. This lawsuit was filed Monday, and is one of several that the Center has filed on behalf of migrants. A hearing is set for July 27.
