Plus: Surprising Debt Crisis; Deep Divers; Fabulous Photos editor's note The minute I heard Consolata Agunga speak, I knew I had to interview her. She's a community health worker in her village of Ramba Pundo in Kenya, keeping tabs on the well-being of 673 community members. At a session at the Skoll World Forum this month, she stood before a crowd and forthrightly stated: "I don't expect mothers to die when they are expectant. It is a crime for a mother to die when expecting." I spoke with Agunga afterward. She goes door-to-door, checking to see if pregnant women are getting care, if children are being vaccinated, if anyone is sick and needs medical attention. It's a tough job. Walking on dirt roads after dark, she once slipped and fell. "I couldn't stand up immediately," she recalls. She managed to make it back home to rest and recover. For her hard work, she gets a stipend of $30 a month -- just a token. But she is committed to serve: "God gives the burden but it is God who gives me the strength."
