[Teo Hernandez]( Sometimes it all comes down to a chance encounter. So, it was back in 1995 when young Teo Hernandez accompanied his father to a construction project, assuming the role of the bricklayer’s assistant. As Teo toiled alongside his family members, laying bricks for what would become an artisan’s workshop, he found his eye drifting away from his work and toward the artisans themselves. Toward the crafts, rather than the construction. The artisans were wood carvers, and in a stroke of luck, the workshop’s owner agreed to take Teo under his wing. As his siblings fell in line with the family businesses — in construction and farming — Teo found himself moving in a different direction. Reflecting back on a decades-long career in the arts, he says, “I feel very proud of what I have achieved considering I never had any formal training.” Not only that, but Teo’s own childhood once threatened a very different kind of future. "I had polio when I was a boy, and it is truly a miracle that the good Lord healed me because I was about to lose my left leg.” Today, he is full of gratitude for his good fortune — both in averting that outcome and discovering his passion for art. “Now not only am I designing, but I work with a team of talented woodcarvers and our main medium is teakwood.” He says, "I love what I do. I have acquired considerable experience and it's rewarding to see people appreciate my designs. We work with sustainable woods and everything we do is entirely done by hand. It is our way of preserving the environment.” On his long list of reasons to be grateful, he is sure to include all the wonderful customers who help make his art a viable means of supporting himself and his loved ones. "I think you offer a great opportunity to artisans like us because you help us reach people in different parts of the world and show them what we are capable of making, and our way of life. Every one of you can be sure that what you're holding in your hand is entirely crafted by hand with a lot of care and dedication. I would like to express my thanks to all of you for welcoming our culture and I hope that, through my story, you get a little idea of what life in Guatemala is like."
