Learn how one community in Brazil is doing exactly this. These artisans have been selected by the prestigious Smithsonian Folklife Festival to represent their region based on their outstanding contributions to their chosen art forms. We know their roots in the Amazon valley trace back at least to the 16th century, when Europeans arrived in Brazil – but their tribe was surely formed long before that. Their village of Barra Velha has survived for nearly two-and-a-half centuries since. In this southern enclave in the Brazilian state of Bahia, the Pataxó community works hard to preserve its cultural heritage and its ancestral lands. The Brazilian constitution acknowledges this indigenous group, but the exact demarcation of its territory has been pending for decades, and the risk of encroachment by ranchers, developers and the modern world is a very real threat. Over the years, the community has been displaced and persecuted. Once, this nomadic tribe called the forests home and relied on the rivers for fish, but today many have dispersed or disappeared. Meet the artisans who are working to preserve the language, customs and crafts of this incredible tribal group. [Tohõ Pataxó]( Tohõ Pataxó A teacher and community leader, Tohõ Pataxó lives in the village of Aldeia Pé do Monte in Bahia, where he has been teaching Patxôha, the native language, since 2008. His beautiful works are inspired by the body painting that his elders passed down, and which represent the history, sacred beliefs and internal life of his peoples. "For a long time, body painting was little-used and almost lost. The community is making an effort to recover this tradition. The elders of the village have been teaching us the meaning of colors and patterns, and they are used in our rites and festivities.” Tohõ Pataxó paints these patterns on clothes and canvas. He says, “In addition to a livelihood, it is also a way to show part of our culture. To preserve our culture and ensure a land for the new generations is a constant and ongoing struggle." [SHOP HIS COLLECTION]( [Pataxó Indigenous Community]( Pataxó Indigenous Community Before the pandemic, tourists visited the Pataxó, where they would buy local crafts from the indigenous community members. But since the pandemic, much of that tourism disappeared. The impact of this revenue loss is significant. "Pataxó handcrafts are an important source of the community's livelihood, and the opportunity to sell their work was of great help.” The Pataxó community’s connection to nature is evident through its works. For example, bird whistles crafted from marupa wood and designed using ancient woodburning techniques. The whistles themselves mimic the calls of partridges, pigeons and small-billed tinamous. A percussion instrument made from brauna wood, featuring a hand-carved rasp, sounds like a croaking frog when a rod is scraped across the spines on its back.
