Hey {NAME}, How's everything? After a short break from travel last month, this month we have another round of travel related books. But, first, congrats to Rebecca for winning the $50 Amazon last month! I'll be doing more book club giveaways and such in the future so keep an eye out! Ok, now here's this month's selection of books: Blue Highways: A Journey into America by William Least Heat-Moon Blue Highways is an unforgettable journey along our nation's backroads. Heat-Moon set out with little more than the need to put home behind him, looking to learn more about the United States and those that occupy it. This is a wonderful book about road-trips, finding yourself, and getting off the beaten path. It's also about learning that what you hear on the news isn't always true! This is an excellent book that gives you wonderful inside into rural America. Island of the Lost: Shipwrecked at the Edge of the World by Joan Druett In 1864, Captain Thomas Musgrave and his crew wreck on the southern end of Auckland Island, an unforgiving sub-arctic island south of New Zealand. There they learned to hunt, build shelter, and survive as they waited for rescue. Unbeknownst to them, on the other side of the island, another ship wrecked on the northern reef. They don't fare as well and this book contrasts the two crews survival on the same island. It didn't take long to read and made me wonder what would happen to me in such a situation! Would I end up like Musgrave or the other crew? The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway The Sun Also Rises is one of Ernest Hemingway's masterpieces. I read this book when I was in high school and recently re-read it (I'm trying to get back into more literature). In this book about post-WWI disillusionment, the flamboyant Lady Ashley and the hapless Jake journey from Paris to Spain with a motley group of expatriates. This book helped establish Hemingway as one of the greatest writers of the twentieth century. It's a fine book on love, illusion, hope, and failed dreams. It's one of my favorite books by him and I highly recommend it! Dispatches from Pluto: Lost and Found in the Mississippi Delta by Richard Grant Richard Grant and his girlfriend move from NYC to the little down of Pluto in the Mississippi Delta. You don't read a lot of books about Mississippi and as someone who has been and fell in love with it, I like how this book comes to no conclusions about the state and the people there. Right when you are going to paint them in one light, they surprise you and do the opposite. To me, Mississippi is one of the most underrated and misunderstood states in the Union. I was shocked at how much fun I had there and this book does an excellent job of discussing the complexities of the people the state. I highly recommend it! That's it for this month! If you have any suggestions, let me know. I'm always looking for new books! Until next month, happy reading!
