This is the story of how I got rejected for European residency and what you can learn from that [image]() {NAME}, Normally, we use this weekly email to share success stories of people Nomad Capitalist has helped: - Clients saving hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars in taxes annually - Clients moving their businesses overseas - Clients obtaining Plan B second citizenship - Clients opening bank accounts, storing gold, and buying properties overseas to diversify their assets Today, however, is a little different. Because I got REJECTED. This is the story of how I got rejected for residency in Europe. It happened several years back, and there’s a valuable lesson to share here. Many of us love the idea of living in Europe, and I actually think that Europe offers a number of great opportunities to plant “flags”. I own properties, bank throughout Europe, and have residence permits throughout Europe, and we have three offices in several eastern European countries. [image] We’ve also learned - through my own personal experiences over more than a decade - that Europe has its own share of challenges. For example, substantial tax savings for those who move to Europe require more planning than moving to Dubai or Thailand. That’s not to say it’s bad; it’s just a bit more work. And that’s where my rejection by one particular EU country comes into play. Several years ago I wanted to start a new branch of our company in Europe, so I established a company (no easy feat in this country especially as I don’t have a university degree), went through months of paperwork, then finally got my appointment with the country’s ambassador to discuss my business. While everything seemed fine at first, they ended up rejecting my business idea as “too simple”. Those of us who run profitable businesses aren’t always sexy enough for some of the “legacy brand” European countries who want the next Facebook. Ultimately, I moved on to obtain other residences and citizenships in Europe and elsewhere without the hassle this structure would have caused me. I learned a few things in the process: - “Legacy brand countries” may not see your full potential; it’s best to go where you’re treated best - Approval for residence and citizenship programs isn’t guaranteed; had I had a proper advisor, he could have told me my idea wasn’t likely to succeed - Less expensive residence and citizenship options often come with a higher level of commitment, like visiting the country every once in awhile or filing tax returns for a business My experiences have helped me better understand what works, what doesn’t work, and general strategy. Because my experiences are personal, it’s easier for me to understand what you want as well. It would be easy for me to pretend that I never fail, but it’s failures that teach us about what not to do. Here at Nomad Capitalist, we have a team of about 50 people dedicating to learning from what doesn’t work so we can help you with what does work. That means we’ll not only tell you that moving to Europe is a bit more work than moving somewhere else, but we’ll make sure you’re aware of what’s actually working in the world now.
