This Week at No Film School... It's been an exciting week in the tech world! After Apple announced their latest Apple silicon chips, the M3, at their "Scary Fast" event (which was shot on [the iPhone 15 Pro with a Blackmagic Camera app](), we were left wondering how much has improved since [the M2](=) dropped in the summer of 2023. We [checked it out](=), and have a few thoughts to share with you about the M3. Beyond Apple's latest announcement, a crew of filmmakers from [Step Three Media]() shared with us how to make an[Oscar-worthy short film entirely on Unreal Engine](. There were a lot of learning curves as they created their short film, [Something For Your Mind](. The Step Three Media team was kind enough to share with us how we can avoid those issues when we are working in the Unreal space. Finally, rejoice! [SAG-AFTRA](=)and the AMPTP have [reached a tentative agreement](=). After 118 days of striking, the actors' strike is officially over. We will update you later next week about what the tentative agreement looks like and how it will affect everyone (including you) for the next few years. Now, let's get into our picks from this week that you should know about. --------------------------------------------------------------- FILM --------------------------------------------------------------- Dream Scenario I'm somewhat of a Nic-Cage-aficionado, which means I will watch anything that has the heavily meme'd actor Nic Cage in it, bad or good. Then, you mix Cage with A24 to create a strangely haunting yet beautiful movie is something that I (and most cinephiles) will eat up. Writer/director Kristoffer Borgli, who became a filmmaker to watch after landing on [John Waters' Top 10 movies from 2022]() his film Sick of Myself, enters the dream world with his latest film Dream Scenario. The film follows hapless family man Paul Matthews (Cage) as he discovers that millions of strangers are dreaming of him. While the film's dream mechanics left more to be desired, the script became Cage's top 5 favorite screenplays he has ever read, and for good reason. The ending left me in tears as it pulls from the pop culture, our anxiety, and desires that we can't voice or act upon. – Alyssa Miller, Editor Read more: [Why Is ‘Dream Scenario’ “One of the Best 5 Scripts” Nicolas Cage Has Ever Read?]( €‹ --------------------------------------------------------------- TV --------------------------------------------------------------- The Holiday Shift This has been a crazy year for me. Just a few months before [the strike](=), I was able to join my first TV room. I wanted to bring our readers some of the lessons I learned and tell them how I got my foot in the door. Hopefully, this helps them take the first steps in their breaking-in story. – Jason Hellerman, Senior Copywriter Read more: [How I Became a Consulting Producer on a Roku Show]() --------------------------------------------------------------- TECH --------------------------------------------------------------- Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K and Apple Silicon M3 The last year of tech releases has been a whirlwind for filmmakers. From the Fujifilm X-H2s and GFX 100 II to the RED Komodo-X and even iPhone 15 Pro Max, creatives have their hands full, to say the least. But the year ended with two releases that, in my opinion, have the perfect symbiotic relationship. [The Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K](=) and the 16” MacBook Pro w/ M3 Max. One tool gives you a full-frame 6K image in 3:2 BRAW, and the other cuts through it like butter, all for under $6K. Sure, you can mix and match with other cameras and lower-tier MacBook configurations. However, the fact still remains that filmmakers have the tools to shoot and edit impeccable films for a price that would have seemed unfathomable even a few years ago. Check out [the NFS review](=) of the 16” MacBook Pro w/ M3 Max by Charles Haines and my thoughts on the BMCC 6K to see if this combo is the right fit for you. Oh, and if you’re worried about rolling shutter on the BMCC, give [this a read]() before you make your decision. – Yaroslav Altunin, Tech Editor Read more: [Can You Fix the Rolling Shutter on the Blackmagic Pocket?]() --------------------------------------------------------------- PODCAST --------------------------------------------------------------- Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem production designer [Yashar Kassai]( wants us to embrace the mess in our movies. On this week’s [No Film School podcast](), he describes the look of the film looking so "dumb-good" and how AI is helping his art go above and beyond its already unique visual style. We learned about how the film pushes the boundaries of animation by adding depth, complexity, and messiness to both the visuals and emotional tone of the film. – GG Hawkin, NFS Podcast Host [Listen Now!]( [Unsubscribe]( | [Update your profile]( | No Film School | 8605 Santa Monica Blvd PMB 39920, West Hollywood, CA 90069 =
