We all witnessed an enemy attack on our country on Jan 6, 2021, and what we heard today was unequivocal evidence revealing there was ultimately just ONE man responsible: Donald J. Trump. Donald Trump single-handedly riled up a violent, murderous mob – not just on the day of the insurrection, but for months in advance – by spreading what he and everyone else in the White House knew was a baseless LIE with the potential to destroy our democracy. He then ordered his murderous mob to the Capitol, where Vice President Mike Pence and the rest of Congress were trying to facilitate the peaceful transition of power. When his mob raised a lynching post and chanted “Hang Mike Pence!” Trump's reaction was: “Haha, he deserves it, they aren’t doing anything wrong!” Donald Trump wanted the Vice President of the United States – his OWN Vice President – to be assassinated. He wanted to see members of Congress assassinated. He wanted to see the Capitol burn! Today, we even learned that he desperately wanted to be part of the violent mob that stormed the Capitol, so much so that he physically assaulted a member of his own protective Secret Service detail who refused to drive him to the Capitol. But here’s the thing – as shocking as this all should have been, absolutely nothing I heard today surprised me. This is who Donald Trump is – a con artist who scammed his way into the Oval Office, abused his position to further enrich himself, his family, and his allies (and punish his enemies), and threw a weapons-grade temper tantrum when he realized his gravy train was coming to a stop. What I keep thinking about today as I write to you is all the young recruits enlisting in the military today who are swearing the same oath I took all those years ago. How confusing and disturbing it must be for them knowing that a former President – a former Commander-in-Chief – committed treason against this country we all love and quite literally would sacrifice our lives for, but still walks around in broad daylight as a free man. This really bothers me – the fact that he is not in handcuffs or in a prison cell right now fills me with rage. And what really blows my mind is the sheer cowardice of the Republican Party! You spineless jackaloons, he wanted you killed, and you still don't have the guts to stand up to him because you are afraid of a mean Tweet! He doesn't even have a Twitter account anymore, and you’re still cowering in fear. Meanwhile, those same spineless hypocrites are now trying to erase history before it’s written to prevent future generations of Americans from ever learning what happened that day and all the ways they were complicit. (They don't want to teach about slavery either … go figure.) Just like the Republican Party wants us to pretend that Donald Trump wasn’t directly responsible for January 6, they want us to pretend like white supremacism, sexism, racism, homophobia, transphobia, and all other forms of injustice simply don’t exist in America … and that they’ve never existed here. This must be a wake-up call for us Democrats, because whether you like it or not, the future of our country, the future of our democracy, and the future of our freedoms rest solely in our hands and on our backs this year. The other side has already gotten on their knees and kissed the ring of a wannabe dictator; there’s no going back for them. Well, guess what? I'll be damned if I roll over and let my country fall to this wannabe dictator and his merry little band of domestic terrorists. I lost brothers and sisters in war fighting for this country, and I owe it to them to keep fighting for it until my very last breath. I love my country, and I am going to fight to save it from Donald Trump and anyone who allies with him, because they are America’s enemies, and I swore an oath to do so. But defeating Trump alone isn’t enough – we need to defeat all the cowards and traitors who have sided with him, especially since January 6th. Top of mind for me right now is Senator Ron Johnson – just days after January 6th, he was there on the Senate floor trying to erase history, and now we know why: He was an integral part of Trump’s deadly coup attempt. And he wasn’t alone: Several other members of Congress, including the ones I like to call the “Treason Caucus” – Matt “The Pedophile” Gaetz, Marjorie “Trainwreck” Greene, Lauren “Breitbart” Boebert, Paul “The Nazi” Gosar, and Louie “Cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs” Gohmert – were part of Trump’s plan to overthrow democracy, too. These people are a cancer to our country and our way of life. To not defeat them, to not utterly embarrass them at the polls would be a travesty, one that I vow will not happen on my watch. When I ask you to join me, I am not asking for me … I am asking for America. We only have one shot at this, we can't screw it up. We must defeat them in November. We need to reach every voter, and we need to do it together. It's time for all of us to step it up. That doesn’t just mean donations – yes, those are really important, but we need a lot more, too! We – all of us – need to be more vocal with our communities, friends, and families … including the Republicans in our lives. The evidence we heard today cannot be overlooked.
