When offered a chance to save Roe v. Wade and our right to choose from being stripped away by an activist Supreme Court, rather than coming down on the right side of history and human rights, the Republicans blocked it with a filibuster. That includes Senator Ron Johnson, who voted with his party to reject a bill that would have codified Roe into law and protected the right to choose for generations to come. I’ve never been more angry or more determined to win this nomination and take Wisconsin’s Senate seat away from Ron Johnson. Today’s failed vote is another setback for abortion access, but I make this promise to you: I will not give up. We will never give up. We will keep fighting for our reproductive freedom. Let’s be clear about this: Roe wasn’t the beginning of women getting abortions. It was the end of women dying from unsafe abortions. I’m beyond frustrated that we have had nearly 50 years to write reproductive freedom into federal law, and that even now, when Democrats control the House, the Senate, and the White House, we still haven’t gotten this done. It’s time for us to stop treating abortion rights as an afterthought. We must end the filibuster and codify Roe. If we don’t, more women will die. We all know what it will take to get there – Democrats need at least two more seats in the U.S. Senate filled by people willing to end the filibuster to protect Roe v. Wade. We must replace Ron Johnson with someone who’s going to fight like hell to defend our reproductive rights.
