HINT: It’s not because they believe in the GOP platform ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ {NAME}, The 1% are out for blood, there’s just no other way to put it. The billionaire class is dumping hundreds of millions of dollars into Republican super-PACs to make sure the GOP takes back the House and Senate. Why? Stop and ask yourself that question – or better yet, ask a right-leaning colleague or friend: What is it about the Republican platform that has billionaires lining up to give them so much money? The biggest reason I can think of is the broken tax system in this country. Right now, the folks carrying the biggest tax burden in this country are people like you and me – regular, working people. The 1% should be carrying that burden, but all too often, they pay nothing. Folks like you and I don't have private jets to write off as a “business expense,” luxury yachts or failed casinos to write off as depreciating assets, teams of fancy lawyers to find every last loophole for us, or offshore accounts to hide our money in. Unlike the billionaire class, we actually PAY our taxes – partly because it’s the right thing to do, and partly because when people like us don’t pay, we go to prison! One reason that billionaires like Donald Trump*, Jeff Bezos, and Elon Musk get away without paying their fair share – or even ANY share – is that income from work and income from wealth are taxed very differently. Working people’s taxes are deducted from our paychecks before we even see that money, while folks like Bezos and Musk don’t have to pay taxes unless they sell off their investment wealth. But surely they get paid a salary for their work as CEOs? Guess again – Jeff Bezos claims a yearly salary of just $80,000 for his job as CEO of Amazon. And that seems downright honest compared to Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg, Google’s Larry Page and Sergey Brin, and Apple’s late CEO Steve Jobs, who all report(ed) salaries of just $1 a year! It’s no accident that the Republicans announced their $100 million+ ad buy yesterday, the day our taxes were due. That ad buy was a message from Mitch McConnell to his handlers: “Keep those Brinks trucks coming, and I will keep protecting you!” “Back it up, boys!” *beep* *beep* *beep* -- Mitch McConnell, probably Who suffers from our broken tax system? Everyone else: Our government agencies, our infrastructure, our schools, our health care system, our children, our senior citizens … everyone and everything else! Republicans don’t care who they hurt – they’re all-in on doing the 1%’s bidding in exchange for campaign donations and kickbacks – so it’s up to you and me to make things right. Unfortunately, that means we need to try to match their fundraising and political spending dollar-for-dollar – and we’ve got to do it without an endless supply of dark money from the billionaire class. The good news is, there are way more of us regular folks than there are of the 1% … I mean, it’s right there in the name: “One percent!” We outnumber them 99-to-1. If we all pool our resources and work together, we can compete with them and even defeat them. The bad news is, so far, we aren’t doing any of that – in fact, right now, grassroots Democratic groups, including ours, are barely scraping by. Every week, the team and I review dozens of applications from qualified, exciting Democratic candidates seeking our endorsement and support. We’d like nothing more than to be able to flood them with resources so they can win in November! But lately, we keep finding ourselves having to put endorsement announcements off because we’re not meeting our fundraising goals. We don’t want to shortchange our current endorsed candidates by bringing new ones on that we can’t afford. {NAME}, if you’ve been waiting until closer to the election to donate, I promise you: Now is the time. We simply can’t wait any longer. We need a massive influx of cash NOW to compete with the opposition. If you've saved your payment information with ActBlue Express, your donation will go through immediately Look, the Republicans have made no secret of what they plan to do if we fail to defeat them at the polls in November. If we let them win, they’ve already announced they want to: - Launch impeachment hearings against President Biden - Dismantle the Affordable Care Act, leaving millions without health coverage - Outlaw legal abortion and contraception (even for married couples!) - Roll back civil rights for LGBTQIA+ Americans, including gay marriage and anti-discrimination rules - Make sure our elections are controlled by GOP loyalists so that no Democrat who wins the presidency will ever again be certified by the states. Why would the billionaire class fund folks who want to do all of this? Easy – they know no law the GOP passes will ever really affect them. They can afford to buy their way out of anything. All they care about is electing folks who will enable them to continue NOT paying their fair share. Billionaires on tax day, probably But here’s our ace in the hole: Even in the reddest parts of this country, Americans overwhelmingly favor Democratic policies. Things like the $300-per-month child tax credit, the Affordable Care Act, and Build Back Better were and are wildly popular! And let’s not forget the oldest saying in politics: “It's the economy, stupid!” Thanks to the aftereffects of the pandemic and Putin’s war against Ukraine, inflation is at near historic numbers worldwide and prices are sky-high. Democrats are actively proposing policies to help ease the burden for the middle and working classes, but what’s the Republican solution? Pass more tax cuts for the wealthy? Every problem in America, you ask a Republican how we should solve it, their answer is to cut the corporate tax rate. Do you think that’s what voters struggling to get by in states like Ohio, Florida, Texas, and Wisconsin want to hear? Of course not! Look, folks, we have the facts on our side. We have the people on our side. All we need now is the funding to cut through the lies and scare tactics of the other side so we can WIN on November 8. We’re committed to this fight, and we know you are too. So please, chip in what you can today and consider making a monthly commitment to support our work. We have a lot of work to do. We’re going to start including a max-out button in our emails because if you’re reading this and you believe in our work, and you’re able to give that much, then we truly hope you will give the maximum amount to help us compete with the billionaire-funded Radical Right. But no matter what you can afford, your gift will go a long way toward helping us prevent a Republican takeover in November.
