For example, many of you have written to us in the past several weeks to say that the United States should stay out of the Russia and Ukraine saga altogether. Well, guess what? The desire to stay out is a foreign policy decision, and some U.S. Senators are advocating for just that, while others, like Lindsay Graham, want us to put troops on the ground in the Ukraine right now. The American government is unique in the fact that our President is the head of our military as well as the head of our government domestically. Most other developed nations don't have that same set up, but here in the U.S., we do. The only reason we are not afraid of all-out tyranny is because we have three equal branches of government: Judicial, Legislative, and Executive. Now, I don't mean to turn this email into a civics lesson – it’s more like a reminder that ALL of our elections here in the U.S. have worldwide consequences, not just the Presidential ones. If we had a Republican-controlled Executive or Legislative branch, believe me, we would not be trying to use every imaginable diplomatic and economic tool we’ve got to deescalate the situation – our troops would be loading up and heading to war against a nation with a nuclear arsenal. I have to say, I’m not a fan of U.S. Senators taking diplomatic trips to hostile territories and conducting meetings with foreign leaders without coordination from the White House. It happens all the time, and foreign leaders don’t quite know how to receive the Senators. On the one hand, they are United States Senators, which means they have a lot of power, but that doesn’t mean they speak for the Administration, so it just leaves everyone confused. Who does this more than anyone? Republican Senators. Marco Rubio, Lindsey Graham, Ron Johnson, and even Ted Cruz. What’s rich is that these Senators and the rest of their Republican colleagues have no problem spending trillions of dollars at war and losing millions of lives along the way, but when it comes to giving parents here at home a $300-dollar-a-month advance on their child tax credit to lift their kids out of poverty, they cry about the budget and say we can't afford it. I want to ask everyone this question: Where do you want to see our U.S. tax dollars spent in the next 5 years? Filling the bellies of hungry American kids, getting rid of the toxic lead in their drinking water, and rebuilding their crumbling schools? Or building and launching more billion-dollar drones and satellites to more efficiently kill bad guys (and maybe a few civilians as “collateral damage”) on the other side of the world? Earlier this week, we announced our endorsement of U.S. Marine Corps veteran Lucas Kunce to the United States Senate. Lucas wants to invest in America because he witnessed firsthand not just the economic and social impact war has on the world, but how the money we spend overseas on nation building takes food directly out of the mouths of hungry children here at home. The United States Senate plays a vital role in foreign policy, and when Democrats control the Senate, the world is a safer place. That’s not conjecture, it’s pure fact. It’s also one of the talking points we will be using in rural America when we explain to folks why we believe they should vote for us instead of the other guys. National polling consistently shows that no matter what side of the aisle they’re on – Republicans, Democrats, and Independents alike – Americans oppose war unless it is an absolute last resort, and our homeland has been attacked like on 9/11 or at Pearl Harbor. Anything short of that, and we want to keep our troops at home where they belong. Of course, we believe in a strong military to prevent attacks on the homeland, and we will continue to invest in our military. But do we have to invest everything in our military, or can we leave some money on the table to invest in our children and their future? [That is what we are asking for, and that is what the Republicans oppose. This is our message, and it’s a message we can win with.
