Unfortunately, things are not looking good. We’ll start with Russia, the country Sarah Palin can see from her backyard: Putin is raising the stakes; he is as determined as ever to invade and occupy a sovereign nation, Ukraine. Putin is not going it alone this time; he’s recruited fellow dictator and thug Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko to help him out. For those of you that don't know Belarus, it’s famous for two things: One, Belarus is Europe's last dictatorship, and Lukashenko its last dictator. Two, Belarus is one of the poorest countries in Europe, where quality of life is right up there with North Korea. Anyone else notice the correlation between the two? Dictatorship and poverty? Anyway, in exchange for diplomatic and financial support from Putin’s government, Lukashenko has publicly backed Putin’s claim that Crimea belongs to Russia, and has echoed his inflammatory anti-Western sentiment. Now, he has allowed Putin to position Russian troops along the Belarusian border with Ukraine for a “war games simulation,” which everyone knows is a BS excuse for building up Russia’s military presence on the Ukrainian border. It does appear from the outside that an invasion of Ukraine is more of a matter of when than if at this point. Ironically, the reason for the escalation in Ukraine is that Putin is losing his stranglehold on his own country, and he needs a distraction in a big way. As a dictator and a thug, of course he looks to violence (war) as the answer. Now, let's shift focus and travel a few thousand miles to the Middle East – The Persian Gulf, to be more exact – where Saudi Arabia and Iran are engaged in a proxy war in Yemen where Yemeni children are being used as target practice by both sides. That sounds harsh and disgusting, and it pains me to even write that, but it is the truth. One big development happened over the weekend, and it wasn’t good: The United Arab Emirates (UAE) were drawn into the conflict when rockets were fired from Yemen into industrial areas in Abu Dhabi, UAE, allegedly killing four people. I use the word “allegedly” because this is the UAE we’re talking about, and their state-run media isn’t exactly known for being truthful. So we really have no idea how many people were killed. It could be more, it could be less, but my guess is it is a lot more based on the pictures that we saw coming from the scene. The Iranian-backed Houthi rebels are claiming responsibility for the strikes against the UAE and claim it is because the UAE is allowing the Saudis to operate out of UAE airspace to fire into Yemen … which is probably true. There are no good actors in these conflicts, and the ones who suffer for it are the civilians caught in the crossfire. As Americans, we have unfortunately aligned ourselves with the “lesser of two evils,” Saudi Arabia, but – and this is an issue we all agree on, Democrat, Republican, and Independent alike – we don't like this. We do not like our country’s involvement in the Middle East. We need to come up with a better way to keep the peace. President Biden is already facing so many challenges he inherited from the Trump administration right here at home, and by the looks of it, the international situation looks to be just as challenging. The good news is, no one is more qualified, experienced, and ready for the challenge than our President. I know he is often mocked on television for his age and that Saturday Night Live can be kind of funny sometimes, but this is no joking matter – as a veteran, I can tell you that with age comes wisdom. I feel like the President is handling Vladimir Putin in the best possible way: Firm and unwavering. Under his leadership, the United States is going to unleash an economic hell on Putin that is likely to bankrupt his country if he invades Ukraine. He will be forced to answer to his people why he dragged them into both a war and a major depression. Look, I hope for everyone's sake that Russia does not invade Ukraine, but I am not hopeful on this one, sad as that may be. This is the world we live in. Stay tuned, I will be discussing this further, and we will keep you updated.
