He was just 8, but his words were a punch to the gut. I had to turn around so he wouldn't see me cry.

I remember sitting in my cubicle at work, face wet with tears, staring in abject horror at my computer screen and asking my coworkers aloud, "What kind of person murders a classroom full of babies?" All I wanted to do was get in the car, race back to the school where I'd dropped my own kids off that morning -- then 8 and 5 years old, roughly the same age as the 20 children who lost their lives at Sandy Hook -- and hug them tight. When I finally picked them up that afternoon, my pre-kindergartener was blissfully unaware and a little confused as to why all of the parents seemed EXTRA happy to see their kids that day, but my third-grader had seen the news on a teacher's laptop screen and he understood. His first question was the same as mine: "Who kills a classroom full of little kids?" The next words out of his mouth took my breath away, and I had to turn away so he wouldn't see me cry: "Think of all the Christmas presents that will never be opened." Later on, when the news showed Adam Lanza's face, he said, "He's like, a teenager. How the heck does a teenager get a gun?" From the mouths of babes. Adam Lanza wasn't actually a teenager, but it doesn't matter, because teenagers can and do get access to guns every day in this country. Like Ethan Crumbley, 15, now facing terrorism, murder and assault charges as an adult for killing 4 of his fellow students and wounding 7 others with a semi-automatic handgun on November 30. He shot 11 people in less than 5 minutes, say local police. At Sandy Hook, Adam Lanza, 20, fired 154 shots in less than 5 minutes, killing 26 people -- 20 of them under the age of 7. What did both of these child murderers have in common? Their parents bought them the murder weapons. Lanza's mother paid dearly for it -- she was the first of his victims on that grisly day. Crumbley's parents still have their lives, but may soon lose their freedom thanks to the bravery of the local prosecutor, Karen McDonald, who brought charges against them for their role in enabling their son's murder spree. It's the first time a prosecutor has attempted to hold parents accountable for giving an obviously troubled child access to weapons, and it's a start. But there is so much more we can and must do, and it all begins with electing leaders who support reasonable gun control measures. My kids are teenagers now. They've grown up doing "Active Shooter" drills their whole lives. It's my fervent hope that their children won't have to. But it's up to you and me to make that happen. -- Kirsten from No Dem Left Behind No Dem Left Behind is a federal PAC focused on building a base of support for progressive values in rural America.
