Medical personnel, friends, and family are left with painful questions after the death of a young woman in Texas. The piece presents the dilemma that doctors and pregnant people across the nation are grappling with: where is the line for the “life of the mother?”  Are doctors in states with abortion bans so acutely fearful of losing their livelihoods or prison time that they are postponing or altogether denying obstetric care that may include suggesting an abortion? The piece asks if those conversations were left at the door in Yeni’s case because of the legal nightmare it creates.  From the article, one healthcare professional said, “One of the great challenges and rewarding features of obstetrics is that you have two patients...Your job is to get both through the pregnancy safely, but that’s not always possible. And it’s very frustrating to have your hands tied because the patient who you need to save is not the one that’s protected by law.”  While organizations like The Center for Reproductive Rights bring the nuances to court, Republicans in states like Texas are digging in their heels to dismiss the existence of these situations. Playing politics, however, has not prevented severe illness and even death in their states, a reality they refuse to confront.  More from the article: “Ever since Yeni’s death, some of the medical professionals involved in and briefed about her care have been haunted by the question of whether sins of omission were committed. They have asked themselves if responsibility for her death resided in part with the new laws that suppress free discussion—both among doctors and with patients—about therapeutic abortion. Had fear of legal repercussions trumped compassionate care?”  Yeni’s story is one of so many, and the endless threat of young lives ending too soon because Republicans have decided to end our right to a form of healthcare. It’s not enough that many in the United States cannot afford healthcare, but now there is an entire field of medicine and care that is blocked. [Help us fight back and ask our representatives to fight for our healthcare and rights:]( If you’ve saved your payment information with ActBlue Express, your donation will go through immediately: [Chip in $24]( [Chip in $50]( [Chip in $75]( [Chip in $124]( [RUSH $250 →]( [Other Amount]( In this together, Anna Scudder Reproductive Health & Justice Correspondent No Dem Left Behind The Roe Report No Dem Left Behind PAC 80M St. SE Suite 100 Washington D.C. 20003 Paid for by No Dem Left Behind PAC.
