As the holiday season approaches, let's take a moment to step back from the negativity and explore a lighter tradition woven into the fabric of American history: the pardoning of the Thanksgiving Turkey.  Abraham Lincoln: This tradition originated in the midst of the Civil War when Tad Lincoln requested his father to spare a turkey named Jack from being part of a holiday meal. President Abraham Lincoln, honoring his son's request, pardoned the fortunate turkey. John F. Kennedy: In the Rose Garden of the White House on November 19, 1963, President John F. Kennedy shared laughter with officials during the presentation of a Thanksgiving turkey by the National Turkey Federation and the Poultry and Egg National Board. President Kennedy granted a pardon to the turkey, humorously stating one of the most famous quotes from this tradition, "Let's ensure he keeps going." Barack Obama: In 2009, Obama granted clemency not to one but two turkeys, showing mercy to both “Courage” and “Carolina” upon the compassionate request of his daughters, Sasha and Malia. Before sending the birds to a life of "peace and tranquility" in Disneyland, the President expressed gratitude for life's blessings and urged Americans to remember those less fortunate during Thanksgiving. He acknowledged the challenges the nation faced, from being at war to recovering from a significant economic downturn, emphasizing the need for collective effort in the journey ahead. Leaders from both parties have been able to let down their guard and enjoy this holiday. In a time with an uncertain future we must fight with everything we have to support democrats in 2024, but please take this holiday to enjoy time with family and friends.
