The last week has felt like a whirlwind that keeps exposing the GOP as an unserious party that is disinterested in governance. This dysfunction is not limited to just the chaos in the House that resulted in the election of Mike Johnson as Speaker, but it permeates through all branches of the government. 1. Legislative: Chaos in the House... While we’re on the topic, it is important to note just how bad things have been under Republican control of the House of Representatives. While the Republicans may have found their Speaker in Mike Johnson, he is far from a unifying national figure. Johnson was one of Trump’s strongest foot soldiers in the fight to overturn the election, and is still an election denier to this day. He also opposes gay marriage, and supported Trump’s Muslim ban in 2017. It is hard to stomach that this man will be leading the People’s House when it is painfully evident how out of step he is with the average American’s beliefs.  Now that the GOP has finally settled on Speaker Johnson, it is important to remember what it took to get to this point. For more than three weeks the Republicans paralyzed the government as internal party politics took precedence over crafting legislation to help the American people. The House was unable to respond to international crises because Republicans were stuck considering if Kevin McCarthy, or Steve Scalise, or Jim Jordan, or Tom Emmer was fit to lead the House. It is blatantly evident that there is no interest in governance from the Republicans. 2. Executive: Trump's Day in Court... This disinterest is not limited to just the Legislative Branch. The Republican’s assumptive Presidential nominee, Donald Trump, has spent the last month in court for civil fraud as well as election interference. On the afternoon of the 25th, Trump’s stormed out of the courtroom where his former attorney Michael Cohen described the President as “speaking like a mob boss” in order to direct illegal activities without implicating himself. Meanwhile, in Georgia Trump’s co-defendants are falling like dominoes, and pleading guilty while tears stream down their faces. It is shameful that the nation is gearing up to decide whether Joe Biden or Trump should serve the next Presidential term, when the real question is if Donald J Trump should have a top or bottom bunk in his jail cell. 3. Judicial: Clarence Thomas Corruption... But the Republican’s inability to lead does not stop here. At the Supreme Court, Clarence Thomas continues to show that he is incapable of following rules and believes himself to be above the law. Justice Thomas has a penchant for accepting gifts from wealthy donors, and most recently it was discovered that one of Thomas’ rich friends bought a top of the line, six figure mobile home for the Justice. How can we expect leadership and impartiality from the nation’s highest court, when conservatives abuse the position to enrich themselves?  Now more than ever it is clear that the United States is in dire need of actual, real leadership. Through the chaos in the House, to Trump’s legal woes, and Clarence Thomas’ financial misdeeds, we cannot afford to give the reins of control to Republicans. Democratic leadership means functionality in government, and accountability across the board. Critically, Democratic-led government opens the door to bipartisanship, because there is an interest in governing. Bipartisanship is impossible under Republican rule because they don’t want to run the country productively.  This is why our mission at No Dem Left Behind is so important. With your support, we are able to continue to elect strong, capable Democratic leaders who can help move our country forward as opposed to running in aimless, self destructive circles.
