American women are crossing the southern border American Women seeking care in Mexico  Earlier this month, Mexico decriminalized abortion nationwide. Consequently, as it has been a little over a year since the United States overturned Roe v. Wade, Mexico has seen an uptick in the number of American women seeking abortions in the country.  From the NYT: “The truth is that years ago, we neither had nor envisioned collaboration with the United States,” said Verónica Cruz, who 20 years ago helped found the reproductive-rights organization Las Libres, which means “the free ones.”  She added: “But faced with the urgency, the increasing restrictions, and having a model, resources like the pills, and as our territory progresses, it became evident that we needed to build international solidarity.”  While Mexico still has states with restrictions and bans, activists feel the country is moving in a positive direction. In juxtaposition is the U.S., which seemingly continues moving towards more restrictions daily. This influx of patients may increase drastically if the Supreme Court rules in favor of conservative lower courts to restrict access to mifepristone or to retract the FDA’s approval of the drug altogether.  More from NYT: “Since the lifting of Roe, Ms. Cruz said she has helped roughly 20,000 women in 23 states secure the abortion pills.” World Contraception Day  September 26th is a reminder of contraception benefits - from the global perspective to the community impact. Access to affordable, quality contraceptive options continues to be one of the ways that we can ensure comprehensive reproductive healthcare. With the passage of the ACA, certain plans (specifically those now hosted on the Marketplace) are required to cover contraceptive options for patients.  This legislation and its effects are a step in the right direction, but access and the correct information must also be a part of pursuing reproductive justice. Conservative lawmakers still willingly spread misinformation regarding contraceptives, including those in the fringe-right group in the House currently. While the impact of this rhetoric is evident in the push for more restrictions on reproductive health, it is our responsibility to fight back with the facts.
