We hope you enjoy this journey with us as we march toward November 5th! -Daniela Rodriguez Georgia The tragic death of Amber Thurman in Georgia, who passed away after suffering complications after taking an abortion pill. Due to restrictive state laws, Amber was given inadequate help. VP Harris rightly pointed out that this loss was preventable. There were laws in place to protect womenâs reproductive rights, but the current abortion bans are endangering lives and driving maternal mortality rates higher each day. In Georgia alone, at least two women have died after being denied essential medical care; this is the dangerous reality created by Trump-appointed justices who overturned Roe V. Wade. There is a very real fight for womenâs health and autonomy across the nation. Abortion is a key issue for many Georgia voters, despite the state's constitution blocking ballot initiatives like those seen nationwide. Georgiaâs six-week ban can only be overturned through federal legislation or a new state law, but the fight remains front and center. Vice President Kamala Harrisâs campaign has been heavily focused on reproductive rights, including multiple stops in Georgia as part of her âFighting for Reproductive Freedomâ bus tour. Georgia state Rep. Shea Roberts noted, "Every event since Harris has been on the ticket has featured abortion discussions." Recent ProPublica reporting highlighted the deadly consequences of Georgia's ban, with Harris warning, "This is exactly what we feared when Roe was struck down." Despite the obstacles, a coalition of advocates continues to press for change, keeping the issue alive in the Peach State. The message is clear: Georgia voters may not have a ballot initiative, but they have a voiceâand abortion is on the ballot. As we approach Novemberâs election, abortion is also a key issue nationally. A new poll reveals a growing consensus among Americans: a solid majority opposes a federal abortion ban and supports access to abortions for any reason. 6 in 10 Americans now believe their state should allow a person to obtain a legal abortion if they donât want to be pregnantâan increase from just a few years ago. This is a powerful signal that abortion rights are more important than ever in this election. Since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, Republican-controlled states have imposed strict bans that deny women the right to make their own healthcare decisions. These draconian laws, which have gone into effect in 14 GOP-led states, are opposed by a vast majority of Americans. 8 in 10 believe abortion should remain legal in extreme casesâsuch as when the pregnancy endangers the mother's life or results from rape or incest. Yet, many Americans worry that a national abortion ban could still be pursued. Despite Donald Trumpâs reluctance to fully endorse a nationwide ban, his appointment of the justices responsible for overturning Roe has led us down this dangerous path. With Trump and Republicans still courting anti-abortion voters, the threat is real. Weâve already seen the tragic consequences in states like Georgia, where restrictive laws led to the preventable death of Amber Thurman. Womenâs lives are at risk under these cruel bans, and we must act now to stop it. Join us next week with Sabrina for the latest updates on nationwide breaking news.
