Be it President’s Day. Be it National Fruitcake Toss Day. ​ When it comes to email marketing, most companies use holidays as an excuse to run a sale or send an email. ​ The problem? ​ It doesn’t pass the sniff test. ​ We may not take National Fruitcake Toss Day seriously. Our customers may not even take National Fruitcake Toss Day seriously. ​ But to send a happy holiday wish – capped off with a “Shop our Fruit Sale-ad” – just feels like a cover. ​ But what’s a marketer to do? We have content calendars to fill – not to mention, sales to run! ​ The solution is not to just forgo the sales and only send holiday wishes. Even holiday emails without a single mention of sale can feel awfully disingenuous. (Not to mention that it doesn’t solve the whole “we have sales to run” thing.) ​ The easy solution is to just forget the happy holiday wishes and run a barefaced holiday sale – to just lean into the consumerism. Yep, that’s actually the better route. Trying to gussy up the mundane in meaningfulness is exactly what comes across as disingenuous. ​ The harder solution is to find the meaningful that’s hidden in the mundane. Not quickly slapping your logo onto a premade template that says “Our customers mean the Orchard to us, Happy Holidays from our Kitchen to Yours” but digging into exactly what it is that makes your customers so meaningful. It means spelling out to them what they do for your team, your vision, your life. It means sending something genuine. Telling a story. Sharing an update. ​ It doesn’t even have to be mushy. But there should be more to it than just a generic happy holiday wish. There should be a point to it. ​ ​If you strip out the holiday wish, is there still meat to the email? ​ The Bitly email we featured on Email Swipes last week was a Valentine’s Day email. [Podcast player for Episode 4 of Email Swipes](=) Instead of using holidays as an excuse to send emails that say absolutely nothing, let’s use holidays as a frame around which we can say what we need to say. ​ If you’re taking space in your subscriber’s inbox and life, have something to say.
