3 thoughts on unsubscribes for you today: ​ Thought #1: I had a panic moment (erm, moments) when I saw my unsub rate dropppppppping during my Black Friday sale. ​ I knew unsubs soar during BF. I knew I hadn't emailed for months prior. I knew I didn't include a BF sale opt out link. ​ But still. As much as we talk about vanity metrics and blah blah, numbers still hit hard. ​ What I didn't notice until a week later though, is that even though I lost a lot of subscribers, I gained a handful too. Surprising, since I haven't been showing up anywhere. (Hi, new ppl, welcome! Hit reply if you haven't yet.) Technically, new subscribers are more valuable than old subscribers, so maybe I came out on top? (I say technically cuz it feels a bit icky to rate people like that. But you get what I'm trying to say.) ​ Thought #2: I got a nasty and completely pointless reply to one of my BF emails. I read it twice just to check that there wasn't some point I was missing. Nope, it was just rude. So I headed to Convert Kit and unsubscribed the anonymous meanie. ​ I NEVER would have done that a year ago. I felt like if you subscribe to my list, I owe you. Which, I do, but to what extent? Which is sort of along the same lines of my breaking the "don't mention when you ghost your list" rule. If I want to give you a big giant hi, I will! It's my list, I can run it how I want. And not just cuz I like testing things. I'm about to start developing a summit talk on the strategy side of building an email list (maybe even 2 talks, hem hem C) – and a big part of your list's success is ENJOYING it! Obviously your subscribers have to like what you have to say, but you have to like talking to them too or conversations just won't happen. ​ Thought #3: For the first time ever, I signed up for an email list to get a freebie and............ then unsubscribed. I never do that. I'm a staunch believer in taking inspiration from lots of email sources and types. But my personal email just went over the 15GB storage allotment. I'm being a lot pickier now. ​ But it does show that email practices can never be black and white because people are never black and white. I'm not the typical unsubscribe – I didn't dislike the content – but I still did unsubscribe. ​ You can't say people react like XYZ or THIS is how people act in any given situation. There are always different situations, different variables, lots of gray. ​ That's why we test and test and test and adapt and adapt and adapt. ​ That's it, just 3 musings for you today.
