The ability to emotionally distance yourself from results. If an open rate is bad, there's usually a logical reason (lack of research, bad send timing, product is badly aligned), not: ​ 1) they hate you 2) your copy is terrible ​ (You need a cold, clinical evaluation - after you cry your eyes out, of course.):) CONSISTENCY :) Knowing your 1 reader. One thing have noticed from email marketing people *lowers voice from rest of copywriters* is that they're SHARPER ​ - Their antennas are more on for new things - They're always testing - They seem to learn faster - My way to 3x my chances of hitting the #1 skill with this bullet list 😂 I think they need empathy! It's essential I feel the pain/joy/anger/love my clients (or my clients' clients) are feeling so I can react, strategize and write authentically to those emotions! Too fluffy-fluffy, feely-feely? I hope not. But I also live with my head in the clouds 😻 Hmmmm... for me it's an ability to adapt for different clients -- change tone, change concepts, change ideas for different brands. Also, the ability to adapt if your strategy isn't working, even if you think it's a really good strategy! That's so hard and humbling. They need to be able to anticipate other's thoughts and actions, and then plan an appropriate response. The ability to follow through until the end. Knowing how to sound human. Being able to induce curiosity in writing - because if can't get people to open your emails and keep them reading the whole job is a non-starter. Is Empathy a skill? Nah. The answer is probably Consistency (ugh...) But I'd like it to be more about quality. So, if it's not Empathy, I think it's Relevance. One essential skill that every email marketer should possess is the ability to write compelling and engaging subject lines. The subject line is the first thing that recipients see when they receive an email, and it determines whether they'll open and read the message. A great subject line should be concise, attention-grabbing, and relevant to the recipient. It should also be personalized whenever possible and accurately reflect the content of the email. Email marketers can significantly improve their open rates and engagement metrics by mastering the art of crafting effective subject lines. Power of persuasion. Give me a good reason to click on your link. Make it worth my while. And don't make it look scary so I get worried that I might get spammed if I follow your lead. A thorough, almost intuitive understanding of the recipient. Because email is a conversation, and tone-deaf emails are real. My response as a very proud member of the first cohort... I'd say the #1 skill is having a deep understanding of the foundational rules and simultaneously feeling empowered to break them. Picked that one up from Nick's workshop and haven't forgotten since I'd say GRIT! Though it's necessary in (almost?) every field- not just email marketing. So I assume you've got a different answer.
