As a teenager at the turn of the millennium, and often without money, the most notable instance was the “collect call”—when my friends and I would talk at the expense of whoever had credit at the time. ​ Certainly, the message "This call is being recorded..." is another I recall, among others. Honestly, it frequently brings to mind the phrase, "The number you have dialed has been disconnected."
