Facebook remains the biggest social network in the world, with almost 3 billion monthly active users. Although Instagram and Tik-Tok remain the rising stars of social media, Facebook content is still reaching huge audiences and garnering massive levels of engagement in the process. For this reason, we look back at the top content on the platform every quarter, and for Q3 2021 there has been a decline in engagement overall. Despite this, there are publishers and pages that saw tens of millions of engagements and deserve to be highlighted. For native content on the platform, this quarter there was a shift away from politics, as sports and viral posts made a comeback. Manchester United’s Facebook page was the top page on the platform for engagement. Soccer was a theme across the top 20 Facebook pages. Bleacher Report Football and Goal both featured, as well as Cristiano Ronaldo’s personal Facebook page. For web content, engagement was down compared to previous Q3s, particularly notable compared to the record levels of engagement set in 2020. There was a similar decline in politics stories on the web too, with it being replaced as the top category among the top 100 stories for the first time since Covid dominated the headlines in Q1 2020.
