We take a look at who's driving conversations on Facebook in the publishing world. [View this email in your browser]( Our monthly Facebook publisher rankings are live! We take a look back at Facebook in August to see which news publishers are driving the most engagement on the platform. We also put together a report on the state of mental health initiatives in 2019. August Facebook Publisher Rankings Engagement numbers across all publishers were lower in August than in July, though it is worth noting that July was the month with the most engagement we’ve seen so far this year. As far as specific articles that garnered the most engagement, we’ve seen local stories go hyper-viral before, as the most shared story in Q1 was a warning about a suspected predator in an unspecified area in Texas. This time we see it for Chicago. People share with their local networks and their curated list of friends, so it is unsurprising that a story like this occasionally garners massive engagement as it begins to resonate among local communities. Some other highlights from August: - CNN remained on top, with nearly 20% more engagements than anyone else - The BBC climbed back into the top three thanks to its coverage of world events - The Washington Post and the New York Times were neck and neck again, with the Times edging just ahead this month If you want to see the entire list of publisher rankings, [check out the full blog here.]( Who's driving the conversation about mental health? According to [Mental Health America]( nearly 1 in 5 American adults have a diagnosable mental health condition in any given year. Another study revealed that 46 percent of Americans will meet the criteria for a diagnosable mental health condition sometime in their life. We wanted to see who is driving engagement to mental health content on the web and social, and which companies are taking action on developing mental heath initiatives for their employees. We found that engagements have fluctuated since 2016, but content focused on mental health initiatives specifically is increasing, as attitudes toward therapy and mental health benefits have shifted with people sharing their personal experiences on social. Other takeaways include: - The top stories about mental health in the past couple years tended to be viral, widely-shared articles where mental health concerns were treated with respect and tact by employers - Talking about mental health on social platforms is helping to curb the stigma, and offers followers an opportunity to feel less alone - Twitter in particular is good for engaging local communities and initiatives around mental health There's more insights where that came from.
