[View this email in your browser]( [NewsWhip]( Let’s get down to business, (to defeat the clickbait) Hi there, Obscure [Disney song references]( aside, this week, we looked at both [business sites]( and [U.K. publishers]( on the blog. While our initial assumption tends to be that publishers may have seen declines this year on social media, we saw the opposite for several of the publishers. As we noted last week, [link posts]( on native Facebook Pages appear to be driving increasing engagements. Building on this, news came out this week that [Facebook video views]( may have been inflated. As we've noted before, [video view]( counts aren't necessarily the most-straightforward metrics, which is why we place much more stock in intentional audience behaviors: likes, comments, shares, and reactions. At the end of the day, what wins out is content with substance, that reaches your target audience where they’re already spending time. Check out our [business publisher rankings]( here. The Top Stories of the Week How did the week shape up on social? Below, the top stories of the week from our [NewsWhip Spike]( platform, ranked by Facebook engagements. This rolls up likes, shares, and comments to web links shared to the platform. For us, it’s always surprising to have our assumptions challenged and subverted. From our filter bubble, we imagined the disappearance of Washington Post journalist, Jamal Khashoggi, would have been the top of this list. Instead, we see stories about animal welfare, government assistance, cannabis legalization, and opioid addiction. On top of that, a fake news publisher, Neon Nettle, managed to get on the list by publishing content through Vimeo. Here's how three of the top news topics played out overall, in terms of Facebook engagements: Although the specific BBC News story about Meghan Markle's pregnancy was #12 on our list for the week, overall, its spike was much higher than both the news around Mitch McConnell and Jamal Khashoggi. Check out your content's performance through [NewsWhip Spike here.]( Have you got your Halloween costume? We're planning on going as Tom from Myspace. Just in case you're still figuring it out, we published our [Halloween Trends Watch Report]( yesterday. Check it out for the top story trends and publishers around Halloween. According to the NRF, Consumer spending for Halloween has risen sharply over the past 10 years, reaching $9.1 billion in 2017. There's plenty of opportunities to jump on the holiday with content around recipes, costume ideas, or [spoopy]( happenings. (Not a typo.) Read the [Halloween]( report here.
