After 17 years of painting exclusively in realistic watercolour, Iâve recently felt drawn towards a slightly looser, more expressive way of depicting the beauty of nature - one I used as a teenager... And Iâve been using acrylics to do it. 🙊 Iâve been hearing my inner artist call louder and louder. Sheâs been wanting me to venture into unexplored areas of my creativity. To pick up some different brushes.
To work in another medium.
To see where this goes. I know how important it is to listen to that voice. Maybe you hear yours calling too. 👂 Iâll tell you more about my current journey another time soon. But whatâs been such a rewarding part of the process has been recognising that the skills Iâve honed so well with realistic watercolour are hugely transferable and have made this learning curve A LOT easier to manage. Those skills include learning to:
🌈 Really SEE colours & know how to combine different paints to mix them
👀 Observe a subject by breaking it down into shapes of colour, then recreating those shapes on the paper to capture a subjectâs beauty 🖌ï¸ However, even with those well-honed skills, my learning curve is a mix of exhilarating, with a regular dose of terrifying. Thatâs because I feel Iâve become so accomplished at realistic watercolour. It doesnât feel hard. It doesnât go wrong. It brings me plenty of joy, and never any frustration... But when I sit in the same seat, at the same easel, with big brushes and acrylics on my palette, I experience challenges again. It feels vulnerable.🙈 Sometimes I worry my acrylic painting will go wrong. Sometimes it DOES go wrong, and I have to figure out what it needs. 🤔 Itâs been a long time since I felt this way. And itâs reminded me: The more skilled we become in other things, the scarier it feels to go back to being a beginner in something else. Struggling doesnât fit with how we see ourselves. Maybe youâre the person others go to for advice. Perhaps, like me, you teach people how to do things. So how do we develop a new skill without feeling that learnerâs frustration? In my experience, knowing that youâre going to improve can make it feel so much easier. And thatâs where Nature Studio membership can really help. As soon as you [become a member]( and start taking the classes, youâll discover something thatâs going to be like rocket fuel to your creativity: That youâre already a better artist than you think. 👩â🎨
