Millions of Americans across the country make an impact in their communities through volunteering and service [] [AmeriCorps] FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASEApril 17, 2023 AmeriCorps Press Office [pressoffice[@]cns.gov](mailto:pressoffice@cns.gov) [AmeriCorps Celebrates National Volunteer Week 2023]( Millions of Americans across the country make an impact in their communities through volunteering and service WASHINGTON, DC — AmeriCorps, the federal agency for national service and volunteerism, celebrates National Volunteer Week April 16-22. The observance honors the lasting contributions of volunteers, empowering all Americans to make a difference in their local communities. Volunteers remain an essential resource throughout American schools, shelters, hotlines and hospitals, as well with civic, faith-based and nonprofit organizations across the country. On April 14, President Biden declared National Volunteer Week through a [presidential proclamation](, reminding Americans that the country is built on service. The president also issued a call to all Americans to do their part by improving the lives of others and lifting up their communities. “Volunteering and service to community epitomize the core values shared by all Americans,” said AmeriCorps CEO Michael D. Smith. “Volunteering has the power to unite people across differences and transform lives—for both those who serve and those who benefit from service. We commend the AmeriCorps members, AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers and everyday volunteers who create opportunity and possibility for families every day.” Volunteer hours generated nearly [$123 billion in economic value]( in 2021, with 124.7 million people helping at least once during the year. Another 60 million Americans formally volunteered with an organization, giving more than 4.1 billion hours of service to their communities. AmeriCorps’ research confirms the tangible benefits of volunteerism. Volunteering provides greater engagement in local communities, leading to greater interaction with neighbors. It also sparks increased participation in civic organizations, public meeting attendance and voting in local elections. Volunteers engage in more discussion of local issues with their families and do favors for neighbors. Finally, volunteers donate to charities at twice the rate of non-volunteers, uplifting and encouraging others to join them. Every year, AmeriCorps leads the way to inspire thousands of individuals and organizations to take action on national days of service, and all year long. The MLK Day of Service and the 9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance bring the country together with people volunteering simultaneously across the nation. These volunteers make an immense positive impact on their local communities through the power of service. AmeriCorps also coordinates national service programs that encourage Americans to commit to longer-term service opportunities, earn benefits and develop meaningful life and professional skills.
