What We're Reading and Listening To Refreshed with a bounce in our step from unplugging over Spring Break and catching up on life, we had a light and fun email planned for today filled with insights to a question we're often asked, "Read or listened to anything good lately?" Then in the U.S. this week, tragic news around police brutality and gun violence happened - all week. While we’re still sharing a peek into what fills our intellectual buckets as parents and educators, we would be remiss if we also didn’t make space to acknowledge these tragedies. To not acknowledge them, would imply that such incidents have become normalized. They are not normal. They are not OK. For preschoolers, they are too young for such news. For school-aged children, how much you share depends on your family’s values and many aspects of your child, including developmental age and maturity, their ability to articulate feelings and their exposure to uncomfortable or upsetting information. If you’d like more personalized guidance in creating a loving and supportive space for your child’s questions and thoughts, please email us at hello@myplinkit.com. We’d be happy to share some example scripts. Just remember: - Our words to our children matter. Our demeanor does too. Our reactions can influence their reactions. Children pick up on the stress and distress around them. - Our role as caregivers is to help our children process information they might hear, to provide space for their questions and thoughts, and to make sure they know that they are physically and emotionally safe. - How our children process the news will not be the way we process it. Keep listening and learning. Here’s to a brighter week and a [simple way to re-center]( when our boats are rocked that's as helpful for children as it is for grown-ups.
