A crack opened in Earth's magnetic field which lasted for nearly 14 hours, allowing solar winds to enter and cause a colorful aurora in the sky. While a crack in the magnetic field sounds dangerous, it is actually quite normal. âWe've discovered that our magnetic shield is drafty, like a house with a window stuck open during a storm,â Harald Frey, lead author of a study on this discovery back in 2003, says. However, while most magnetic fields are thought to last a short amount of time, this one endured for several hours, leading to a G1-class geomagnetic storm. â Want a daily digest email featuring our latest articles? [Read on My Modern Met]() â The crack in the Earthâs magnetic field is one of those occurrences in which the truth is stranger than fiction. And hereâs another. We love an interesting fact, and one of the most interestingâand weirdestâwe've heard in a while comes from Redditor kiwi2703. They decided to get creative with some calculations and answer a question you might never have asked yourselfâif you blended up all the humans in the world, how big would the resulting ball of goo be? Yes, this sounds weird, but interestingly, the human goo ball isn't as big as you might think. â Being a My Modern Met member has its perks. With that in mind, the Twitter hashtag #MyOneScienceTweet is encouraging scientists from all fields to share their knowledge with others. Started by entomologist Dalton Ludwick in 2017, it's turned into a fascinating thread for scientists to share facts, dispel myths, and shut down misconceptions. â Do you find inspiration in stories and artists like these?
