Q1) What inspired you to design this typeface? Were you designing for a specific use case or customer? Or were you more focused on a particular artistic vision? Or some combination of the both?
Before launching Silver South, Iâd previously focused exclusively on hand lettered fonts, which came much more naturally to me having a background as a designer in the music industry. I was ready to try something a bit different and had just recently experimented pairing a hand lettered font with my first ever sans serif font, resulting in my 'Golden Youthâ font duo. Golden Youth was received very positively.
After the success of Golden Youth, I knew it was then time to attempt my first serif font, and Silver South is the result of that. I wanted to create a clean, classy and versatile pairing of a high contrast serif and a natural, expressive script, which could pair together with a broad range of design briefs.
Q2) Walk us through the process of designing this typeface. Was there anything different about it, compared to your usual process? Did it come along more easily than others, or were there unique challenges?
Being my first serif font, this was a steep learning curve for me. It was time to ditch the pen and paper beginnings of my hand lettered fonts, and build this one entirely in Adobe Illustrator. It was a very slow process but I learned a great deal about perfecting bezier curves, and as a result my more recent serifâs have been far easier to make. I was recommended a plugin by Astute Graphics called Vectorscribe which was a huge help, and I now donât think I could live without it!
Making a script typeface was also a new experience for me, as it was my first font made entirely on an iPad using Procreate. I wanted to create a totally clean and smooth handwritten script, so this was a huge time saver compared to drawing the characters on paper and then scanning and cleaning up the vectors afterwards.
Q3) Looking ahead, are there new projects you're excited about? Anything you haven't tried yet but are eager to explore?
At the time of writing this, weâre only a week before Christmas, so after a year of 11 font launches Iâm pretty much only thinking about lying down and eating mince pies and spending time with my family! But Iâm certainly excited to continue exploring some more unique sans and serif designs going into the new year. One thing Iâd like to try and get my head around is variable fonts.

Q1) What inspired you to design this typeface? Were you designing for a specific use case or customer? Or were you more focused on a particular artistic vision? Or some combination of the both?
With the design of the Graphit typeface, we started a journey through the world of reduced forms, straight lines, round circles and pointy elements. Our aim was to create an inspiring and professional type family â rooted in the idea of constructed typefaces with one distinctive difference: the triangle. The question we kept asking ourselves was: Can we create a type family with a strict set of rules for how to construct each letter, while maintaining a homogenous character and not being dependent on a certain use case or target group?
Q2) Walk us through the process of designing this typeface. Was there anything different about it, compared to your usual process? Did it come along more easily than others, or were there unique challenges?
In early 2018, we started developing the typefaceâs essential character and released a free font named after our design studio, LIT. Soon after, Hannes von Döhren suggested expanding it into a family and publishing it with HvD Fonts. We drew every single letter from scratch, and changed the name to Graphit. The basic idea of Graphit was to create a well-balanced proportional working geometric sans from geometric basic shapes: circle, square and triangle. And, to take it a step further by focusing on the use of the triangle. We added an alternate character set to achieve perfect legibility.
Q3) Looking ahead, are there new projects you're excited about? Anything you haven't tried yet but are eager to explore?
In the past, we were happy to create custom typefaces for some iconic brands like Volkswagen, Lufthansa or Hyundai. Moving forward weâd like to extend our services to a wider range of businesses and organizations who believe in the strength of bringing unique character and functionality together.

Q1) What inspired you to design this typeface? Were you designing for a specific use case or customer? Or were you more focused on a particular artistic vision? Or some combination of the both?
The idea of creating Gabriela stemmed from the desire to continue the Gabriela Stencil project by giving it a wider range in use, in tone of voice and taking it from something exclusive to something warmer. To allow for broader usage in short texts, titles and logos, we explored the idea of new ligatures, which grew as the project was developed.
Q2) Walk us through the process of designing this typeface. Was there anything different about it, compared to your usual process? Did it come along more easily than others, or were there unique challenges?
Each new project implies new challenges - in this case I started from the Medium weight to have more control with the intermediate weights, then continued with the Heavy and the Thin. Previous experience helped me solve faster, but it took more time as Gabriela has new masters, more alternates and more ligatures. My challenge is to make better quality fonts focused on their purpose, without losing sight of the real needs of the users because after all, I'm a graphic designer too and I also face challenges as a type user.
Q3) Looking ahead, are there new projects you're excited about? Anything you haven't tried yet but are eager to explore?
Mexico is starting to appear on the typographic world map. My goal is to continue contributing and adapting to the emerging new needs across the globe and embracing new technologies. Iâm excited to apply my expertise in âcorporate identityâ to develop more complex projects that contribute to brand recognition in a more comprehensive and functional way. I'm currently developing a couple of interesting projects that excite me. I hope to publish and talk about them in due time.

Q1) What inspired you to design this typeface? Were you designing for a specific use case or customer? Or were you more focused on a particular artistic vision? Or some combination of the both?
Montecatini takes its cues from the elegant Stile Liberty travel posters of Italy in the early 1900s. During the early 1980s, I made my first visit to Montecatini Terme, where I came across a poster with wonderfully idiosyncratic letterforms, which have been a continued source of inspiration ever since. While working on the family expansion of Montecatini, we renewed our focus on the Stile Libertyâs variations of lettering, both condensed and expanded, light and bold. The use of an array of stylesâpeppered with ligatures throughoutâcreated a vibrant typographic system. We realized that it would be more advantageous to design with Montecatini if there were varying degrees of width and weight to work with. These observations would become the basis for how we interpreted the letteringâs behavior into a functional typeface.
Q2) Walk us through the process of designing this typeface. Was there anything different about it, compared to your usual process? Did it come along more easily than others, or were there unique challenges?
The process of designing Montecatini Pro was both straightforward and challenging. Since we had already drawn its initial style (now Stretto Light), the voice of the font was known and our task was to find out how to carry its timbre into new widths and weights. The most challenging component of this task was executing the many ligatures in wider and bolder versions. Each combination had to be considered and reviewed, and in the end many were left out as they failed to match our expectations in the most extreme styles.
Q3) Looking ahead, are there new projects you're excited about? Anything you haven't tried yet but are eager to explore?
Weâve been exploring more Italian letterforms from the 1920s and 30s, from both hand-lettered and wood type sources. We hope to have many more font families to follow!

Q1) What inspired you to design this typeface? Were you designing for a specific use case or customer? Or were you more focused on a particular artistic vision? Or some combination of the both?
I started working on the font shortly after I moved into a new apartment in Berlin. My first inspiration came from a sign in a shop as I walked through the streets in my new neighborhood. The sign was set in Britannic or something similar. I was also inspired by the art details in my new building which is a âturn of the centuryâ building. From the entrance of the building to the doorbell, you see really nice Jugendstil features which I presume subconsciously were integrated by me into the design. I wanted to create a modern interpretation of Britannic with more weights and sizes. Which is why I choose to design the family in three optical sizes (Poster, Head and Text) with 12 styles for each subfamily. With its high stroke contrast, the family is well suited for luxury brands and the fashion industry. The text styles have a rough and workmen appearance which represent a charismatic voice very well.
Q2) Walk us through the process of designing this typeface. Was there anything different about it, compared to your usual process? Did it come along more easily than others, or were there unique challenges?
The design came along pretty easy. Maybe because this was a new genre for me, where extravagant shapes are allowed like the lowercase g or a, or the uppercase R, or the digit 2, which is one of my favorites.
Q3) Looking ahead, are there new projects you're excited about? Anything you haven't tried yet but are eager to explore?
To keep my eye fresh, I like working on multiple fonts at the same time - hence, there is always something in the making. I'm currently juggling between a geometric sans, a major design update of one my earlier fonts and a serif for display usage.

We were often asked, and we ourselves wanted to develop an ultimate typeface for interfaces and in the end, we decided to make such a project! We started the typeface design process with a deep and thoughtful study, which involved measuring and analyzing everything that is somehow connected with modern interfaces.
Q2) Walk us through the process of designing this typeface. Was there anything different about it, compared to your usual process? Did it come along more easily than others, or were there unique challenges?
The development team of this type family consisted of 9 people. The process of creating the font family itself took more than one year. We carefully documented all the stages of typeface development and put everything together in a single text, which shows the complexity and fascination of this process. We look forward to the first examples of using this typeface in real cases and projects. The feedback from this will give us a better understanding of what else can be improved in the typeface, and help generate fresh ideas for new, more complex and large-scale projects.

Q1) What inspired you to design this typeface? Were you designing for a specific use case or customer? Or were you more focused on a particular artistic vision? Or some combination of the both?
I was inspired by classic hand-lettered logos like Coca-Cola, Cadbury, Harrods, Kiehlâs and many others, as well as several amazing contemporary lettering artists. I wanted to create something that designers could use to build similar looks and have several alternates to really customize their logo.
Q2) Walk us through the process of designing this typeface. Was there anything different about it, compared to your usual process? Did it come along more easily than others, or were there unique challenges?
The process began with developing the basic structure of the font, while at the same time collecting many hand-lettered logos and samples for inspiration. I would then test the font by trying to recreate these samples. The Coca-Cola logo, was particularly fun to explore. After adding many alternates, swashes and tails, the character set felt robust. The next step was to create the Vintage Cut, which I wanted to look worn and not too rough. After some trials, I found a method for creating the worn look, which utilized Adobe Illustrator. I have since been exploring faster methods for creating this look directly within Glyphs.
Q3) Looking ahead, are there new projects you're excited about? Anything you haven't tried yet but are eager to explore?
Currently I have a few Sans Serifs on the go. One will be hand-lettered, with the worn look and many alternates. I'm excited to see the response to this one.
