Boasting supra-human strength and versatility, this font responds to your every command of Width, Weight and Slant, and is built to tackle the most challenging design battles. “Way back in 2009, when I stretched and squeezed the single-weight ‘Elephantmen' font into ultra-Wide and super-Condensed widths way back in 2009, I was thinking of a Variable Font before I even know such a thing existed. Now it does!” — Comicraft Special Introductory OFFER - 50% OFF 1 Variable font for $99 $49.50 [Shop Elephantmen Variable Now]( [About the Designer]( About the Designer. John Roshell John Roshell has lettered thousands of comics for Marvel, DC, Dark Horse & Blizzard, designed the logos for Avengers, Daredevil, Black Panther & Angry Birds, and created hundreds of typefaces for Comicraft and his personal foundry Swell Type. Let's hear from John Roshell: 1996: I'm hired to design the logo for the “Heroes For Hire” comic for Marvel. It's a relaunch of the old “Hero For Hire” series from the 1970s, so I dip into my reference folders to look for that logo, and discover similar “squarish bold” hand-drawn logos on even older Captain Marvel comics, including a delightfully quirky lowercase italic. I trace these letters in Illustrator, and use them as the basis for the “Heroes for Hire” logo. The series runs for two years and is pretty much forgotten. 2001: But the letters are not! Since we Comicrafters find ourselves using them all the time on other comic titles and logos, I complete the solid alphabet, along with a 3-dimensional “Open” style, and we release them as the “DropCase” font family. 2006: Comicraft co-creator Richard Starkings uses DropCase (almost unrecognizably squeezed) to design the logo for his new comic book series “Elephantmen.” I use DropCase extensively on the cover bits, editorial pages and ads. 2008: I create a thinner version of DropCase for body text, along with an Italic and a grunged-up “Aged” version. These are soon released as the “Elephantmen” fonts. 2009: The Elephantmen story nears a major turning point, and I decide that, rather than using a hodgepodge of fonts for Elephantmen design like I have been, to create one family of fonts for all of the design and branding. I stretch and squeeze the Elephantmen font into widths from ultra-Wide “Greatest” to super-Condensed “Tallest”, all with Bolds and Italics. I was thinking in terms of Variable Fonts before I even knew they existed. 2011: The new fonts make their debut on “Man and Elephantmen” covers, designs and ads, and we release the fonts in three families: “Great & Tall”, “Greater & Taller”, and “Greatest & Tallest”. These names are inspired by the “All Creatures Great & Tall” store where Elephantmen shop for clothing in their world (though Richard designs that logo in our “The Story So Far” font - go figure). 2017: I attend my first TypeCon, and am introduced to the incredible app GLYPHS, capable of creating Variable Fonts! Glyphs co-creator Rainer Erich Shiechelbauer generously gives me a crash course in the app, and shows me how all of the Elephantmen font weights could be combined to create infinite inbetween fonts! Since all of the weights originated from the same source, I figure “this will be easy!” But looking at it closely, many of the quirks from the original traced letters remain, from not-quite-vertical lines to inconsistent corner sizes & shapes. And I notice that the weights don't quite match up -- for example, the Bold of the narrow appears visually “bolder” than the Bold of the wide. The whole thing needs an overhaul. Every once in a while, I put a few hours into making improvements, but it never seems to get any closer to completion. Starting fonts from scratch seems easier than trying to fix all of the little issues I keep discovering in this one! 2023: The DropCase and the Elephantmen fonts have a pop culture moment, appearing in three movie promo campaigns in the course of a year. I decide the time has come to dig in and finish this font. (I even promised it as a 2024 release to the team at MyFonts, to make SURE I finish!) And to my great relief, I realize it's not really as far from completion as I'd thought… 2024: The Elephantmen Variable Font is finished and released! It contains over 800 glyphs in 42 widths & weight “instances”, two groups of Stylistic Alternates, Tabular numbers, and support for Western & Central Europe plus Cyrillics. Text with a very high Flesch reading ease score (about 100) is straightforward and easy to read, with short sentences and no words of more than two syllables.
