Shooting Illustrated
From Sept. 15: Founded in 1852, Smith & Wesson has been making revolvers for almost as long as revolvers have been around. Best known for supplying Detective Inspector “Dirty” Harry Callahan with his iconic Model 29 .44 Mag., Smith & Wesson revolvers have been at the forefront of numerous firearms innovations, such as the bored-through cylinder for self-contained metallic cartridges, the top-break action with automatic case extractors and, well, you get the picture. [12. The M1 Garand: History and disassembly](
American Rifleman
From Sept. 1: During World War I, the United States Army experimented with a number of different machine gun designs, and the news reports of the tests got a young inventor thinking about, and eventually designing, a machine gun of his own. His initial attempt was a primer-actuated light machine gun he submitted to the National Bureau of Standards, which had instructed him to make a model of it. That design became the basis for what would, eventually, become the M1 rifle — commonly called the “Garand” after its inventor, John Cantius Garand. GunDigest
From Aug. 3: The SVD may be the world’s most iconic sniper rifle despite not technically being a sniper rifle. Developed to be integrated into every Soviet army squadron as a support weapon similar to a machine gun or grenade launcher, the SVD only had to be accurate enough to effectively engage enemy targets at a max of about 800 meters. It was intended to provide precise, suppressive fire on enemy positions as well as pick off high value targets. [READ MORE]( [15. I have this old gun: Colt Commercial Model 1911](
American Rifleman
From July 7: Through the years, countless articles have been written heralding the many attributes of the U.S. Model of 1911 pistol. But the focus has mainly been on military versions of this slab-sided warhorse. There was also a civilian counterpart to the M1911, and, while not as widely produced, it represents an important variation. In fact, slightly more than 336,000 were made before the advent of the Series 70 (compared to the 2.7 million M1911s made for Uncle Sam). Turnbull Restoration Co. Inc.
That’s the foundational question that collectors and heirloom owners should ask when considering what could become a journey to revitalize, or perhaps even resurrect, a classic firearm. Turnbull Restoration Co. has helped its customers understand all the ins and outs of firearm restoration for over 30 years. In fact, it may surprise many how much restoration work the company actually declines. It’s because Turnbull knew from the beginning that helping with decision-making that’s right for the customer is what would be right for the company. [LEARN MORE]( [16. Gun Owners of America
From June 23: The ATF has officially published its pistol-brace executive action that could turn millons of law-abiding gun owners into felons. The rule would make almost all guns equipped with popular pistol braces illegal, requiring gun owners to destroy, register, or surrender their lawfully-acquired firearms accessories. Make no mistake: this is an outright BAN by unelected bureaucrats at the ATF. [READ MORE]( [17. The Charter .40 S&W Pit Bull](
Guns Magazine
From Nov. 9: As most gun people will know, the problem with using auto-pistol cartridges in a revolver is that the cases have no rims. Way back in 1917, when more handguns were needed during World War I, using the “half-moon” clip solved this. Many years later in 1989, Smith & Wesson used a “full-moon” or “star” clip in their 10mm Model 610. The same system was used by S&W in 2003 for their Model 646, in .40 S&W. Meanwhile, in 1980, they made the 9mm Model 547, and tried a “spring-ring” in the ejector. Sometimes though, the strike of the firing pin flexed the spring, the cartridge moved and there was a misfire. So, they added a fixed stud inside the top of the frame to bear on the cartridge rim. Finally, they discontinued this model. Collectors note: There were only around 10,270 of these made. [READ MORE]( PRODUCT SHOWCASE

Guns & Ammo
From Oct. 13: Question: Thank you in advance for your expertise and insight you can offer on this pistol. Dad’s grandfather and his son were stripping down a near-century-old farmhouse for lumber in upstate New York during the Depression. They found this pistol sealed up in an iron box within one of the home’s chimneys. The dwelling had been vacant for many years with the owners or prior occupants unknown. How it came to be there will endure as a mystery, but as to the origin of this pistol, I turn to you for answers. American Rifleman
From Feb. 16: Ammunition purchasers across America — or make that would-be purchasers in record numbers — are finding shelves bare, and unfortunately that’s hardly breaking news. If this was simply a Christmas-season run, we could insert a Grinch joke here and assume things would return to normal after the holidays. But, in fact, this shortage, as many readers can attest, traces back at least to spring when COVID mania shocked the country and has since intensified under an unprecedented chain of cultural phenomena. Many gun owners feel that the only way to ensure they have ammo when they need it is to buy in bigger-than-normal quantities, and the result is hoarding. Firearm News
From Oct. 26: Ever since 1814, the Swedes have practiced "armed neutrality" to dissuade potential invaders and since the late 19th century they have maintained a strong military. Because of this, they were quick to take advantage of small arms developments and by the early 20th century, thanks to a strong industrial base, Swedish troops were armed with modern rifles, machine guns and semiauto pistols.
