Firearm News
Ever since 1814, the Swedes have practiced "armed neutrality" to dissuade potential invaders and since the late 19th century they have maintained a strong military. Because of this, they were quick to take advantage of small arms developments and by the early 20th century, thanks to a strong industrial base, Swedish troops were armed with modern rifles, machine guns and semiauto pistols. Although he probably didn’t plan it, when New England shirtmaker Oliver Fisher Winchester acquired the Volcanic Repeating Arms Co. in 1857 and re-named it the New Haven Arms Co., he ended up dramatically altering firearm technology, helped settle the American West and subsequently created a legacy that continues to this day. The 464 wasn’t Mossberg’s first lever-action centerfire rifle. Do you remember Montgomery Ward’s Western Field Model 72? It was a Mossberg, and not to be confused with the Western Field Model 33, which was a private-labeled Marlin in .30-30 Winchester. The Model 72 was the result of a dinner discussion between Alan Mossberg and Montgomery Ward’s buyer Van Bethurem, who already did business with Mossberg for private-label centerfires. A year after that dinner, Mossberg presented a prototype and a deal to drop the Marlin for Mossberg’s Model 472 was sealed. As the United States service rifle, the Norwegian-designed Krag-Jorgensen was produced at the Springfield Armory from 1894 to 1904. It was used in the Boxer Rebellion, Spanish-American War and in the Philippine-American War before it was replaced by the Model 1903 Springfield. This may represent a fairly short reign as our standard-issue service rifle, although it’s a couple of years longer than the M14 — although the ’14 remained in limited service for far longer. The FN FAL became known as the right arm of the free world due to its widespread adoption by NATO-aligned countries during the Cold War. While the entire goal of the FAL project was for NATO to standardize on one small arm and cartridge, the amount of variation that existed between the member states’ rifles was great enough to consider the effort a failure. American Hunter
During the late 19th century and into the early 20th century, when the boundaries of cartridge capabilities were being simultaneously defined and broken, certain cartridges rose to the top. With the colonization of East Africa and India, British hunters were regularly pursuing the most dangerous game on the planet, including the elephant, Cape buffalo, rhinoceros, gaur, tiger, lion, leopard and hippopotamus. The transition from blackpowder to smokeless, and from pure lead projectiles to what we now know as the jacketed softpoint, and onto the non-expanding ‘solid’ bullets certainly changed the capabilities of the known cartridges. Allan Jones writes: When I wrote about muzzle flash recently, I extensively referenced Tenney L. Davis’s classic textbook, The Chemistry of Powder and Explosives. It has been helpful in my understanding of propellant evolution and is a key source of historical information. Where Davis lacked information, I turned to Philip B. Sharpe’s Complete Guide to Handloading (Third Edition, 1953), which gives a superb and detailed account of propellant development and history, including actual component ratios taken from U.S. and foreign patents. Antique U.S. Spingfield Armory Model 1896 Krag Carbine chambered in .30-40 Krag. This original Krag Carbine is in excellent mechanical condition and has a nice honest look about it. The 1896 carbine has a total of seven differences from the 1896 Rifle and are as follows; a 22" barrel, a half-stock, one barrel band, no butt swivel, a swivel bar and ring, a band spring, and a sectional cleaning rod stored in the stock. This particular 1896 Krag Carbine is in all original (not a shortened rifle) besides the rear sight slide and ladder which have the higher graduations for the 1896 Krag Rifle, however the sight base is the correct "C" marked carbine base. The slide could easily be replaced to make this original carbine 100% correct. The metal components of this carbine have lost their original blue finish but have developed a very nice patina over the years. The original carbine stock is in excellent condition for its age, and has had one repair made to it on the right side of the top tang. The "JLA 1897" inspector cartouche and "P" proof marking are still more than visible. The stock also has "TROOP F (or possible E) 5th CAVALRY" stamped onto the left side and it matches the wear and script of the rest of the carbine. Unfortunately, we do not have any provenance with the carbine but it more than likely has a vast and unique background. The bore of this particular carbine is in great condition for its age, with light frosting and surface pitting near the muzzle, but visible rifling the whole length of the barrel. All the mechanical aspects of this carbine function 100% and the action locks up tight. Don't miss your opportunity to add this neat piece of U.S. Military history to your collection!
