[The Kentucky Rifle: An Independence Day Hero]( [Share on Facebook]( on Twitter]( on Linkedin]( this article to a friend]( View Outdoors
While researching information about the influence hunters had on the Revolutionary War, many of the search results alluded to the prominence of the Kentucky rifle and its impact on this war's outcome. In an essay celebrating America's Founding Fathers and the right to keep and bear arms, The New American touted the Kentucky rifle and its central role in the American Revolution. [READ MORE](
[I Have This Old Gun: Smith & Wesson Model 1]( [Share on Facebook]( on Twitter]( on Linkedin]( this article to a friend]( Rifleman
Daniel Smith and Horace Wesson were not men who gave up easily. In 1854 the partners came out with a unique, lever-action, repeating, tubular-magazine-fed pistol. Well-made and mechanically innovative, it suffered a major problem in that the variant of the earlier "Rocket Ball" self-contained cartridge that it chambered was unreliable, delicate and underpowered. As interesting as the gun was, it was a flawed product. [READ MORE](

For years, I didn't care for the Model 1911 pistol for a combination of reasons. The specimens I had a chance to fire as a much younger fellow weren't very comfortable in my hand, as they had curved mainspring housings, and a couple were just not terribly accurate. Eventually I sampled a couple of pistols with flat mainspring housings with better sights, tighter rail-to-rail fit, tight bushings and decent triggers. Suddenly, the 1911 platform became all Jeff Cooper said it could be. [READ MORE](

[Lionheart Industries Regulus Pistol, What's New?]( [Share on Facebook]( on Twitter]( on Linkedin]( this article to a friend](
Lionheart Industries, known for their LH-9 pistols imported from Korea, has released their Lionheart Industries Regulus line of pistols. The LH-9 is a variant of a service pistol that has been in use by the South Korean military and police for more than 30 years. Reminding many of a blend between the Smith & Wesson 5906 and Browning High Power, the LH-9 offered a bit more with its "double action plus" trigger system. [READ MORE](

The Dan Wesson Specialist Commander is a very nice Model 1911. It starts out as a full set of stainless-steel forgings: frame, slide, and barrel. Then the frame is handfitted to the slide by the company's top-notch gunsmiths. Once they are mated, the match barrel gets installed in the slide and fitted. Then the three major parts (barrel, slide and frame) stay together through the remainder of the build process. [READ MORE](

Several years ago, I traveled up to Wyanet, Illinois, for a big gun auction. This was not a high-class affair as might be presented by James D. Julia or Rock Island Auction, but rather a local sale that featured hundreds of economical to medium-grade firearms. I have forgotten what I went to for, but what I did see were endless tables of modestly priced hunting shotguns. [READ MORE](

[Rare JOSEPH CARPER Inlaid Southern Rifle c. 1850s]( [Share on Facebook]( on Twitter]( on Linkedin]( this article to a friend]( International
GI: 101063416
Description: Percussion Long Gun with Inset Stock from Virginia
Here we present an antique Joseph Carper Southern Half Stock Long Rifle, made circa the 1850s in Raleigh County, Virginia. Carper was a celebrated gunsmith and the “Carper Gun” was noted for its accuracy and its finish on the stock and he began the gun making business at the age of 22. His gun were among the best and were very difficult to beat. It was common belief that “When better mountain rifles are made, Joseph Carper will make them.” Guns made by Joseph Carper sold for around $25 each and were known to be worth every bit of it. One distinguishing mark of a gun turned out by Joseph Carper was its stock with rich embellishments. Carper and his family remained in Virginia, which was soon made West Virginia. Each of his sons fought in the war on the side of the Confederacy.
This rifle features a “GOULCHER” lock with double set triggers for precision shooting. The top of the barrel is signed “JOSEPH CARPENTER” behind the rear sight. The barrel is fully octagonal with a .41 caliber bore. The stock is elaborately decorated with wire pounded into the wood in specific designs.
The overall condition is good. The iron surfaces are dark with age. The markings are clear. This rifle has been restocked and it appears that every effort was made to embellish it as the original was. The stock is smooth and solid with just a thin sliver near the fore end cap on the right side. Ramrod tubes have been soldered. The bore is clean and sharply rifled. The action is excellent, strong and crisp. Here is a mighty fine rifle from 1850s Virginia!
