Davis STARTS NOVEMBER 29 Curator Spotlight Agnès Varda died while Laida Lertxundi was making Autofiction, inspiring in the Basque filmmaker an irrepressible need to rewatch Varda’s entire oeuvre. It’s touching to discover the French master’s fingerprints all over this beguiling, elusive film that explores faces and places, and luminously connects the dots between Lertxundi’s signature preoccupations. There’s Los Angeles, of course, emerging both distant and close: from its mountains and its skyline, to its streets, where a civil rights parade marches, people coming together, holding signs of protest, contributing with their presence to a cause. There’s music, being performed and being listened to, always diegetic, always tactile. Then there’s women, waking up from a state of languid unconsciousness to one of lucid awareness of their bodies and their souls. Their vulnerabilities are exposed as they reflect on the implications of the feminine experience in a world that is as physical as it is dreamlike. Hearing these women talk about their lives feels like a gift, like an invitation to open up and share experiences, to give and receive advice. A comforting sense of belonging emanates from this film, transforming the individuality often associated with its titular storytelling concept into something beautiful resembling a collective reverie. This sense of community happens to mirror Lertxundi’s way of working, in which there is no real separation between who’s in front of the camera and who’s behind—cast and crew are one and the same, the suppression of the idea of hierarchy as a triumph of poetry over patriarchy. The artist herself lies in bed, embodying the very notion of horizontality that her practice stands for. The languor of the bodies allows for fragility to surface, becoming in fact a strength: an object of study, a reason to keep filming, to keep searching, and to keep bonding. - Chiara Marañón, Director of Content 6eb99d7f-321e-4dfe-b2c2-a8ebf5237ee7.png [e8344b65-97b1-4509-ad86-d1ff0a6ac6c0.png]( [80c23f8a-4173-484d-86e8-88f1dbc6f886.png]( [6f3c5351-5db7-4814-8ad0-72a206ca03a6.png]( You are receiving this email because you registered a MUBI user account.
