[MTGGoldfish][Magic Newsletter] [width="1"] --------------------------------------------------------------- The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-Earth Previews --------------------------------------------------------------- of+the+Machine/Wrenn+and+Realmbreaker#paper of+the+Machine/Archangel+Elspeth-borderless#paper We got two early March of the Machine previews this week with Wrenn and Realmbreaker and Archangel Elspeth. Spoiler season starts officially on Wednesday, so be sure to check back at www.mtgpreviews.com. --------------------------------------------------------------- Budget Magic: Mono-Green Elfball but in Standard! --------------------------------------------------------------- 2BElfball-eb223245-57ad-4d80-ac36-063a078a910c%2Ejpg Is Nissa, Ascended Animist a Standard-legal Craterhoof Behemoth? Is it strong enough to make Elfball a thing in Standard on a budget? Let's find out![Read more]( --------------------------------------------------------------- Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive --------------------------------------------------------------- [Machine God's Effigy](Brothers+War+Commander/Machine+Gods+Effigy-retro#paper) [Shattered Sanctum](Crimson+Vow/Shattered+Sanctum#paper) [Gishath, Sun's Avatar](Suns+Avatar#paper) This week in the world of Magic finance things were mostly quiet, although this is likely to change with March of the Machine spoiler season starting on Wednesday. The biggest winner of the week was The Brothers' War Commanders' [Machine God's Effigy (extended)](Brothers+War+Commander/Machine+Gods+Effigy-extended#paper), with the cloning mana rock more than doubling in price up to almost $5. If you follow the Commander Clash Podcast you might remember the card - it was one of Phil's [Shark Tank picks last week]( - I guess this price spike probably makes Phil the true winner of the episode as people are literally willing to invest in his pick. If you need a copy you can save a couple of bucks by going with the extended border version from collector boosters, which are still under $3, rather than the retro version that came in the commander precons themselves, although all versions are trending up so it's probably worth snagging the copies you need soon. Speaking of cards that might be worth picking up soon, some of the dual land cycle from last year's Innistrad sets are slowly but steadily creeping up in price, especially the Innistrad: Crimson Vow members of the cycle. When the set released, cards like [Shattered Sanctum (prerelease)](Crimson+Vow:Foil/Shattered+Sanctum-prerelease#paper), [Stormcarved Coast](Crimson+Vow/Stormcarved+Coast#paper) and [Deathcap Glade](Crimson+Vow:Foil/Deathcap+Glade#paper) were around $5. Now they are all in the $8 to $12 price range with several members of the cycle showing up on our list of biggest Standard gainers of the week. Despite their lack of land types, the cycle has proven to be quite popular in Commander, showing up in 15% to 20% of eligible decks according to EDHRec, putting them solidly in the second tier of Commander duals alongside lands like the Core Set buddylands and the painlands. Just as important, the best members of the cycle show up regularly in Pioneer giving the lands a lot of potential even once they rotate from Standard in the fall. While it's hard to see prices getting too out of hand considering iconic duals like the shocklands are $20, assuming the cycle isn't reprinted in the near future, it could continue to slowly grow. If you get a chance to snag copies on the cheap as rotation nears, they seem like a solid pick up for Commander and Pioneer. Finally in the realm of Commander, [Gishath, Sun's Avatar](Suns+Avatar#paper) (up 20% this week) is now over $30, which is pretty absurd considering that the Dinosaur legend was a $3 unplayed mythic during its life in Standard just a few years ago. While picking up copies now would be risky - with Ixalan returning next fall Gishath seems like the kind of card that could be reprinted in Commander Masters in a few months - the bigger lesson here is to hold onto those janky Standard mythics that could end up being popular in Commander, because once a card becomes popular in Commander the sky is the limit. As the rise of [Gishath, Sun's Avatar](Suns+Avatar#paper) shows, Commander players are willing to pay a premium to get the perfect leader for their decks. --------------------------------------------------------------- Podcast 425: Magic Just Printed the Rarest Card Ever --------------------------------------------------------------- The crew talks Arena Championship II, Lord of the Rings and the impact of the 1 of 1 The One Ring.[Read more]( --------------------------------------------------------------- Commander Clash Podcast 087: Is Commander Ruining the Color Pie? --------------------------------------------------------------- Is the color pie changing and if so, is Commander responsible for it?
