Budget Magic: $103 (29 tix) Mono-White Persist Combo (Modern, Magic Online)
---------------------------------------------------------------
[Mono white%2bpersist%2bcombo f68aa3bd f91b 45c2 a31a e7c532c236a8%2ejpg](2BPersist%2BCombo-f68aa3bd-f91b-45c2-a31a-e7c532c236a8%2Ejpg)
Can an infinite mill / damage / life combo deck work in a mono-white shell on a budget thanks to some new Modern Horizons cards? Let's see[Sigarda's Aid](Moon/Sigardas+Aid#paper)
While Core Set 2020 is right around the corner, this week the community remained focused on Modern. In fact, of the 20 most viewed cards on MTGGoldfish over the past seven days, 15 are from Modern, and even the Standard cards (like [Teferi, Time Raveler](of+the+Spark/Teferi+Time+Raveler#paper), [Narset, Parter of Veils](of+the+Spark/Narset+Parter+of+Veils#paper), and [Arclight Phoenix](of+Ravnica/Arclight+Phoenix#paper)) have Modern implications. As a result, Modern Horizons as a whole is up again on the week. While the set didn't have many huge gainers (outside of [Plague Engineer](Horizons/Plague+Engineer#paper), which doubled up to just under $5 based on increased sideboard play), most of the Modern playable cards from the set ticked up this week. With a B&R and Modern Mythic Championship in the next month to keep a focus on the format and Core Set 2020 taking over as the newest set for players to open, it wouldn't be a surprise to see prices continue to increase over the summer.
Meanwhile, [Sigarda's Aid](Moon/Sigardas+Aid#paper) more than doubled in price this week to $7. The reason? [Colossus Hammer](Set+2020/Colossus+Hammer#paper) from Core Set 2020. While the combo requires three pieces and seems pretty janky on paper, it's also fast. The main idea is to play something like [Kor Duelist](Duelist#paper) or [Glistener Elf](Phyrexia/Glistener+Elf#paper) on turn one and then on turn two drop [Sigarda's Aid](Moon/Sigardas+Aid#paper) and then [Colossus Hammer](Set+2020/Colossus+Hammer#paper), which [Sigarda's Aid](Moon/Sigardas+Aid#paper) will equip for free, allowing for a one-attack turn two kill in Modern. While lacking the redundancy of other, similar decks like Infect (since there's only one [Colossus Hammer](Set+2020/Colossus+Hammer#paper) and there are a bunch of random one-mana pump spells), any time you can kill someone on turn two with just three cards is worth noting. Even if the combo isn't competitive, people are going to try to make it work, which was enough to drive up the price on [Sigarda's Aid](Moon/Sigardas+Aid#paper).
Finally, this week we finally got some details on "Arena Modern." It's called Historic and (at least for now) will only contain cards from Ixalan forward. Combine this with the fact that it's an Arena exclusive and it seems unlikely that the format will have much financial impact for the foreseeable future. Over the long haul, if the format grows it could start to influence paper prices — some sort of post-Modern format seems inevitable eventually — but for now, rather than a replacement for Modern, Historic seems to be not much more than a place for Arena players to continue to play their rotating cards in a casual setting. This said, it might be worth hanging onto some potentially playable cards from Dominaria, Ixalan block, and Core Set 2019 rather than dumping them for near bulk at rotation, just in case the format does come to paper at some point down the road.
