It was just last year that the card was the foundation of our $100 Modern Black Burn deck with copies being around $4 and now a single [Soul Spike](Spike#paper) costs more than the entire deck. Gameplay-wise the reason for the spike is that the card works incredibly well with [Necrodominance](Horizons+3/Necrodominance#paper). You can use the enchantment to draw a bunch of cards and then immediately pitch some of them to [Soul Spike](Spike#paper) to drain your opponent and regain the life that you paid before you have to discard to hand size. The biggest reason the rare is now $100 is that it's from Coldsnap (a notoriously under-opened set) and has never been reprinted. There simply aren't that many copies of [Soul Spike](Spike#paper) to go around. If you happen to have some, I'd look to sell them as soon as possible. At its current price it's a juicy reprint target and once it does get reprinted, its price is going to crash hard. Last week we discussed how the surveil lands were increasing in price. This week it's the fetchlands' turn, specifically the enemy fetchlands that were last reprinted in Modern Horizons 2. After dipping down near $15, cards like [Arid Mesa](Horizons+2/Arid+Mesa#paper), [Misty Rainforest](Horizons+2/Misty+Rainforest#paper) and [Scalding Tarn](Horizons+2/Scalding+Tarn#paper) are back up over $25 and climbing. This makes a lot of sense. It's been more than two years since Modern Horizons 2 released and the set isn't really being opened anymore, so supply has stagnated. Thanks to the immense amount of demand for fetches from Modern, Legacy, and Commander prices will likely continue to slowly creep up until they are reprinted again. If you've been holding off on picking up the copies you need, you might as well snag them now. The same is true of the Modern Horizons 3 fetches, which are likely at their floor, although it will probably be a year or two before they start to climb thanks to all of the new Modern Horizons 3 supply. Finally in stranger news, [Tree of Perdition](Moon/Tree+of+Perdition#paper) in on the rise, gaining 42% this week up to $22. This is in part thanks to its synergy with the new Assassin's Creed legend [Ezio Auditore da Firenze](Creed/Ezio+Auditore+da+Firenze#paper) where the Tree is the perfect way to set an opponent's life total down to ten for the Ezio kill. But oddly the Tree is also showing up in Pioneer Rakdos Aggro which looks discard [Tree of Perdition](Moon/Tree+of+Perdition#paper) and use [Agatha's Soul Cauldron](of+Eldraine/Agathas+Soul+Cauldron#paper) to give a much smaller creature like a [[Voldaren Epicure] its ability, letting it tap to set the opponent down to just one life! If you've got some sitting around in your bulk box it's a great time to sell them into the hype. --------------------------------------------------------------- Monetizing Modern: The Profitability of Power Creep --------------------------------------------------------------- Modern Horizons 3 just released and brought with it a new Modern format. Text with a very high Flesch reading ease score (about 100) is straightforward and easy to read, with short sentences and no words of more than two syllables.
