Texas woman's attorney reacts to court blocking emergency abortion  [VIEW IN BROWSER]( MSNBC DAILY Understand today's news [VIEW IN BROWSER]( MSNBC DAILY Understand today's news Sunday, December 10, 2023 IN CASE YOU MISSED IT [Alternate text] As the GOP presidential [candidate pool dwindles,]( the fourth and final [Republican debate](Wednesday night became yet another [contentious showdown]( with no real [winner or loser (apart from candidate Donald Trump, who did not attend and remains miles ahead in polls).](Meanwhile, defendant Trump was [back in court](this week in his N.Y. civil fraud trial, where he’s set to[testify in his own defense]( as the final witness on Monday. Adding to the [media scrutiny]( around Trump’s presidential agenda, the former president blundered [a softball question]( this week from Fox News host Sean Hannity, responding to a question about his [authoritarian aspirations]( by saying he would only be a dictator [“on Day One”](of his presidency. Two months after being ousted as House speaker, Rep. Kevin McCarthy [announced that he's quitting Congress altogether](, joining [a growing list]( of lawmakers who plan to retire. The [mass exodus from Congress](also includes [Reps. Patrick Henry](, [Dan Kildee](, Dean Phillips and [Ken Buck]( and [Sens. Mitt Romney]([and Joe Manchin](, among others. At least three people were killed in a [campus shooting]( at the University of Las Vegas on Wednesday, adding to a [record year of mass killings]( in the U.S. On Thursday, President Biden’s son Hunter Biden was [indicted]( on [nine federal tax charges]( in California, further eroding any basis for Republicans’ [misguided complaints]( about a “two-tiered” justice system that purportedly favors Democrats. On Friday, the Texas Supreme Court paused a lower court ruling that [would have allowed a pregnant woman](, whose fetus is unlikely to survive, to get an abortion. Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton had pushed for the stay, arguing that Texas law does not permit abortions solely based on the fact that a fetus is unlikely to survive outside the womb.
