Santos had survived [two previous unsuccessful attempts]( but was unable to weather the fallout from a recent [House Ethics Committee report](detailing his campaign misconduct. Santos is the first House member to be [expelled in more than 20 years](and the [sixth House member]( to be expelled in U.S. history. At the [end of a weeklong truce]( with Hamas, Israel resumed its assault on the Gaza Strip on Friday. Hamas has released 105 hostages since the beginning of the [temporary ceasefire]( on November 24, in exchange for 240 Palestinians who were being held in Israeli jails. On the presidential front, [Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and California Gov. Gavin Newsom]( took the stage Thursday night for a debate hosted by Fox News. Former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley [snagged a 2024 endorsement]( that was originally expected to go to DeSantis. However, both Haley and DeSantis are still trailing far behind former President Donald Trump, who remains the Republican frontrunner. On Thursday an appeals court reinstated Trump's gag order in his [New York civil fraud case]( after court officials revealed that Judge Arthur Engoron's clerk had received a "deluge" of threats following the former president's complaints. And on Friday, [a federal judge denied]( two of Trump's motions to dismiss the federal election interference case against him. Missed something? Don't worry.
