Fighters infiltrated the southern border and fired a massive barrage of rockets from the [Gaza Strip](. President Joe Biden condemned what he called an “appalling assault against Israel by Hamas terrorists” and said that [“Israel has a right to defend itself and its people.”]( He added, “My administration’s support for Israel’s security is rock solid and unwavering.” Hundreds of people are dead and many more injured in the initial violence and military retaliation. An ongoing hostage crisis is also unfolding – Hamas said it had taken “[dozens](” of people hostage back into Gaza. Netanyahu [warned of a "long and difficult war”]( to come. Donald Trump’s civil fraud trial kicked off this week with an [alternately explosive and dull](, but at all times, [undoubtedly humiliating](, series of court hearings. The proceedings were best summed up by the [angst-ridden scowl]( that plagued the former president’s face as he [sat in the courtroom]( throughout the week. Unfortunately for Trump, his only reward for turning his court appearance into “[The Donald Trump Show]( – complete with pre-trial allegations of shams, scams, corruption, and a [litany of verbal attacks on the judge]( who’s about to decide his fate – was [another gag order.]( However, this didn’t stop Even more disappointing to Trump, the [grand spectacle]( of his court appearance – aptly described as a [“political stunt”]( by New York Attorney General Letitia James – was overshadowed by another [history-making spectacle]( on Capitol Hill: the vote to oust Speaker Kevin McCarthy. A mere nine months after it took a [historically humiliating]( 15 ballots to get him the gavel, McCarthy’s [fate was sealed]( in [one fell swoop]( by 8 far-right Republicans and the entire Democratic coalition. It was [a cruel twist of irony]( just days after McCarthy [attempted to use]( Democrats as a [scapegoat for the near-shutdown.]( As the [race for a new speaker]( kicks into full gear, the [future of the GOP-led House]( – and the race to avert another government shutdown – remain uncertain.
