[Prominent Republicans]( made a variety of [unproven assertions]( during those proceedings without [uncovering any new information]( that might bolster their claims of partisan motivations in the agency’s operations. Roughly 48 hours later, the same Justice Department [indicted a sitting Democratic Senator]( – chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee Bob Menendez – on federal bribery charges. President Biden [addressed the United Nations on Tuesday](, announcing a [new partnership]( between the U.S. and Vietnam. On Friday, he announced [the first-ever]( White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention. Ukrainian [President Zelenskyy also met with Biden]( and top U.S. lawmakers on Capitol Hill to [request more aid](, even as some GOP members question [the need for more funding.]( As for Donald Trump, the 77-year-old presidential hopeful – [who has been indicted four times]( and currently faces dozens of [criminal charges]( related to attempts to overturn his 2020 election loss – [stoked the flames]( of GOP infighting this week by calling for a government shutdown unless the prosecutions against him are defunded. He may have been trying to divert attention away from a slew of negative press about his [disdain for disabled veterans](, continued refusal to [join the GOP debate stage]( , and a [contentious pre-trial hearing]( in the New York Attorney General's fraud case against him and other Trump Organization executives.
